Known best for his smooth vocals and amazing range in his 12-year tenure with CCM vocal group Avalon, founding and former member Jody McBrayer stepped out of the group scene and released his own solo project, This Is Who I Am. Look for a nice blend of pop, R&B, and Latin sounds on this critically-acclaimed project, perfect for anyone of any age.

Jody McBrayer stepped out from under Avalon's comfortable umbrella of protection to release his first (and to date, last) solo album, This Is Who I Am. Finding inspiration through his father's passing, Jody felt a need to place heart and vision to a topic that was "too personal for Avalon." The result is a 10-track record that encompasses the entire spectrum of the new insight learned in his life's latest lessons while still delivering amped-up praise. Musically, the individual songs incorporate nuances from staple Avalon power-ballads to house-trance to Latin-salsa, the latter influence a nod to Jody's Spanish heritage on his mother's side. What results is an album that sounds vocally stunning (it's Jody McBrayer...) but overproduced at times. Basically, the voice is much too mature for the fading "teen-pop" sound. The major emotion ballads, "To Ever Live Without Me," "I Never Knew" and "Love Can Break Your Fall," will find a perfect fit with Avalon fans and radio alike as will most of the other tracks. Avalon's all about over-production, but it would have been nice to see Jody spread his wings a little bit more than diving into what he calls "urban," also known as drum machines and keyboard wonders. While I myself have enjoyed Avalon's music, the harmonies and vocal presentations from Jody balance the lack of creative instrumentation.
Jody at his Best!| Posted July 03, 2008
Jody McBrayer has been with Avalon for years and while there he stepped out for a bit to record a solo album. This solo album called "This is Who I Am" shows us that Jody McBrayer has a stunning voice with Avalon or without. Ever since I got this album i fell in love with it. From the opening track to the ending track you'll stay hooked on this album. You have many different types of music on here from r&b, some latin-salsa, and those powerful ballads you know from Avalon. This album features the #1 Hit "Then to Ever Live Without Me". Jodys voice throughout this album is incredible. You can definitely see that in the songs "Love Can Break Your Fall" and "There For Me". The lyrics in this masterpiece are also great. Whats good is that this album has a nice flow of music. It opens with nice upbeat sounds then flows through to amazing ballads and vocals and then ends again with nice upbeat sounds. This is definitely a two thumbs up album and one that everyone should have!
