Jesus Culture worship Leaders Kim Walker-Smith and Chris Quilala have birthed several new worship anthems into the Church from their Jesus Culture conferences. "Rooftops," "One Thing Remains," "Your Love Never Fails," "Holy Spirit," "Break Every Chain" and "Pursuit" consistently bless me as a worshiper. I was excited to worship along with Jesus Culture's
Unstoppable Love, recorded at this year's conference and released on June 3.
These excellent live recordings on
Unstoppable Love are all prayers and declarations of the Supremacy and Sovereignty of Jesus. These are great songs to pray along with these anointed worship leaders to express allegiance to Him, with longings to know Jesus and be in His presence. I really love how expressive these songs are, especially the Kim Walker-Smith led anthem "In Awe of You." I had the chance to speak with Kim about the song.
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
This song was written by my good friend Anthony Skinner, who wrote a lot of these songs. Anthony is a big part of my testimony. In a significant moment I had with God that set the course for my life, Anthony was the one leading worship at the time. He's always been a good friend and an inspiration for me. Any time he has songs that he sends my way to check out, I'm always pretty excited.
I was really drawn to this song, and it felt like a message that is really strong in my heart. The message has come at a really good time in my life. It has been a big, full, crazy year, navigating being a new mother, as my son just turned 13 months, and I'm expecting my second baby. We moved to Sacramento and there have been a lot of changes that can be overwhelming, intense and even scary at times.
To be able to sing out "
You reign forever, You hold me together"— these are words to declare the goodness of God, no matter what is happening in my life. Good or bad, He reigns. He is Sovereign. He is aware of where I am, and He is the One who keeps me at peace, keeps me moving forward and helps me stand strong in the midst of anything. When this song came along, it was an easy pick for me to want to sing it. The song is so much of my heart and what I feel inside and what I've been living.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Psalm 25:14-16 (VOICE): ONLY those who stand in awe of the Eternal will have intimacy with Him, and He will reveal His covenant to them. PERPETUALLY my focus takes me to the Eternal because He will set me free from the traps laid for me. QUIETLY turn Your eyes to me and be compassionate toward me because I am lonely and persecuted.
Psalm 33:8 (NASB): Let all the earth fear the Lord; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.
Psalm 145:10-12 (VOICE): All creation will stand in awe of You, O Eternal One. Thanks will pour from the mouths of every one of Your creatures; Your holy people will bless You. They will not be silent; they will talk of the grandeur of Your kingdom and celebrate the wonder of Your power. Until everyone on earth who has ears to hear knows Your valiant acts and the splendor of Your kingdom.
Ecclesiastes 5:7 (VOICE): Daydreaming and excessive talking are pointless and fleeting things to do, like trying to catch hold of a breath. What good comes from them? It is better to quietly reverence God.
What is the takeaway message?
With this song, the takeaway is about the Sovereignty of God and that no matter what, He reigns in our lives. He is good and He is there, and He commands us to worship. Whatever season we are in, we are called and created to worship Jesus, whether you feel like it or not. The miraculous thing is that when you begin to worship Him in faithfulness, it stirs up something in your heart and it can pull you out of whatever funk you might be in.
I love the bridge of this song: "
we lift up holy hands." During that part, I've noticed whenever I've led this song live, that's when people really get excited and passionate about worship. I'm lost for words. I'm in the presence of God. I'm declaring His Sovereignty and I'm worshipping Him. There's an exciting moment there.
The theme of the album as a whole is based on the song "Unstoppable Love" because that was a message that we felt was coming out of the songs as a collective. At the live event where we recorded the album, it was a theme that the Father kept speaking. His love is completely unstoppable. There's nothing that can separate us from His love. The whole message of that conference and what we wanted to convey in all of our songs, what it all comes down to, is one clear thing: that God loves you. He's crazy about you. He desires a relationship with you. He made a way to have a relationship with Him and worship Him.
Lyrics:
What do you do when you're lost for words?
They all fall short, so I just stand in awe
Stand in awe of You
Melodies come and go
You remain, so I stand in awe
Stand in awe of You
You reign forever and hold me together
And come whatever, You love me
You reign forever and hold me together
And come whatever, I love You
What do you do when God forgives
And gives His life so you can live in awe?
We live in awe of You
Melodies come and go
You remain, so I stand in awe
Stand in awe of You
You reign forever and hold me together
And come whatever, You love me
You reign forever and hold me together
And come whatever, I love You
You reign forever and hold me together
And come whatever, You love me
You reign forever and hold me together
And come whatever, I love You
Holy, holy, we lift up holy hands
All for Your praise, Your honor and glory
Holy, holy, we lift up holy hands
All for your praise, Your honor and glory
I'll sing forever, I'll sing forever
I'll sing forever, I love You
I'm impressed by the consistent quality and fresh worshipful songs that come from Jesus Culture. This album is no exception and is arguably their finest and most Scriptural collection of songs for the Church yet, in particular "Sing Out," "Light of the World," "No Other like You," "Unstoppable Love," "In Awe of You" and "Your Name is Glorious."
Unstoppable Love is about proclaiming the majesty of God and crying out for His Presence throughout this incredible worship experience. The truly unstoppable love of Jesus is beautifully expressed in these compelling songs. The Lord calls us to have joy in Him regardless of our circumstances, which these songs celebrate. Our true joy comes from our relationship with Jesus.
"In Awe of You" reflects the thematic and biblical proclamations found throughout the album and found in Hebrews 4:16 (ESV): "Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need," and Psalm 89:7 (NLT): "The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than all who surround His Throne." Getting a foretaste of eternity for followers of Jesus, you can join in with Kim and sing out "
I'll sing forever, I love You."
Right from the opening question of the song ("
What do you do when you're lost for words?"), I was hooked by the emotional and prayerful tone of the song. There are several Scripture passages about standing in awe of the Lord, also reflected in the Matt Redman song "Let My Words Be Few." This song is in that same vein. Be captivated by the reverence of standing in awe of God and sing out "
Melodies come and go, You remain, so I stand in awe, stand in awe of You." Amen to that!
