Jesus Culture has developed and introduced several amazing worship artists and songs.
Kim Walker-Smith ("
How He Loves," "
Rooftops," "
Pursuit," "
In Awe of You"), Chris Quilala ("Your Love Never Fails," "One Thing Remains"), Bryan and Katie Torwalt ("Holy Spirit"), Kristene DiMarco ("Break Every Chain") and Derek Johnson ("
The One We Love") have consistently blessed me as a worshiper. In anticipation of the
Outcry Tour, I was excited to worship along with Jesus Culture's latest,
Unstoppable Love, which was one of my
top 10 worship albums of 2014.
These excellent live recordings on
Unstoppable Love are all prayers and declarations of the Supremacy and Sovereignty of Jesus. These are great songs to pray along with these anointed worship leaders to express allegiance to Him, with longings to know Jesus and be in His presence. I really love how expressive these songs are, especially the Kim Walker-Smith led anthems "Unstoppable Love," "In Awe of You" and "Your Name is Glorious." I had the chance to speak with Chris Quilala about "Sing Out."
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
For this song, the bridge came first, which also has the dulcimer intro. Scripture talks throughout about singing out praises to God. I love the thought of all of us joining in singing out to God and lifting up their own songs spontaneously to God. The heart of this song is to point people to Christ, as the first song sets the tone for the rest of the album. It was also the first song for the conference where we recorded it, and is a great way to point people to Christ. That's the heart behind the song.
Every song is personal to me, and with any worship song that's out there, you as a worshiper have a chance to join in and celebrate someone's victory, overcoming certain struggles and pain and finding freedom. Every opportunity to join in someone's journey is a gift. Hearing the songs Kim sang and brought to the table was really cool. It's great to be part of someone's life victory. Listening to Amanda Cook's life victory song, "You Make Me Brave," is also inspiring for me to learn that she felt free to do what God had called her to do.
I feel that way about many of the songs on this album. These songs are our lives and our stories. It's always vulnerable to put those out there, but it's also a blessing to bring people into our encounters and walks with God, that they can jump on board and receive that. I think there's an inheritance in songs, as worshipers can find their freedom in Christ and they can ride into that. A song is a victory, and a great thing about corporate worship in joining in those victories together.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Psalm 30:4 (VOICE): Sing, all you who remain faithful! Pour out your hearts to the Eternal with praise and melodies; let grateful music fill the air and bless His name.
Psalm 47:1 (NLT): Come, everyone! Clap your hands! Shout to God with joyful praise!
Psalm 98:4 (NLV): Call out for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Sing out loud songs of joy and sing praises.
Psalm 147:7 (NLT): Sing out your thanks to the Lord; sing praises to our God with a harp.
What is the takeaway message?
It's funny because with every album we've recorded, those are the first times we've performed the songs live. When I started writing songs with my keyboard and guitar player, we didn't have a theme in mind. We were gathering melodies and hooks and inspirations from our own worship times. Maybe it was a spontaneous chorus, and we came back and wrote verses. When it came to the pre-production of this album, we noticed the theme of the songs being about His love and our response to that. We were somewhat surprised in how it came together so well. There are a lot of references about the Cross and His mercy and His goodness.
Like you said, starting out with "Sing Out" and ending with "10,000 Reasons," it's all about singing about what He has done for us. He's been so good to us. He's washed our sins away. He's freed us. He's delivered us. Whatever individually or as a band or ministry, whatever we're going through, we're doing what we're doing because He's been so good to us. We've been faithful to that, and this song and this album is about being thankful for everything God has done.
Lyrics:
Worthy is the lamb
That was slain
Glory be unto
Your Great Name
You are, You are
You are, Holy
Let every heart
Let every tongue
Lift up your name
With all creation sing
Let earth resound
With heaven's praise
And with one voice
Let all creation sing
Holy is the lamb
That was slain
All creation
Every tongue proclaim
You are, You are
You are, Holy
Let every heart
Let every tongue
Lift up Your name
With all creation sing
Let earth resound
With heaven's praise
And with one voice
Let all creation sing
We sing, sing out
We sing, Holy is Your name
We sing, sing out
We sing, Worthy is Your name
We sing, sing out
We sing, Holy
We sing, sing out
We sing, Worthy is Your name
Oh Worthy is Your name
Worthy is Your name
Worthy is Your name
Your name, Your name
Let every heart
Let every tongue
Lift up your name
With all creation sing
Let earth resound
With heaven's praise
And with one voice
Let all creation sing
I'm impressed by the consistent quality and fresh worshipful songs that come from Jesus Culture. This album is no exception, and it is arguably their finest and most Scriptural collection of songs for the Church yet.
Unstoppable Love is about proclaiming the majesty of God and crying out for His Presence throughout this incredible worship experience. The truly unstoppable love of Jesus is beautifully expressed in these compelling songs. The Lord calls us to have joy in Him regardless of our circumstances, which these songs celebrate. Our true joy comes from our relationship with Jesus.
For many years now, going back to the first album
We Cry Out, the ministry of Jesus Culture has been a way to put Scripture into the minds, hearts and mouths of believers everywhere in a fresh and creative way. That allows listeners to be edified and to be drawn to the presence of the Lord, to call out and desire to be in His presence. I know the first time I heard Kim Walker-Smith speak about God's presence in her powerful recording of "How He Loves," I was ushered into a place of reverence and awe of God, realizing just how special it is to be one of God's children. This song helps set my mind on Christ and to let the distractions of the day melt away, focusing instead on worshiping the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
This song gives us a foretaste of eternity where one day believers will be singing to Jesus "
Holy is Your name, Worthy is Your name." A thread found throughout this album is that we are compelled to love by the unstoppable love of Jesus Christ. The first song urges us to "
sing out," and the closing song "10,000 Reasons" urges to "
sing like never before." We love because He first loved us. God is love.
As Chris shared, songs are an inheritance to share in victory together. God's Word doesn't return void, and He wants us to have victory. As a follower of Jesus, you'll want to join in with the angels, saints and elders around the Throne and sing out: "
With one voice, let all creation sing, we sing, sing out, Holy is Your Name, we sing, sing out, Worthy is Your Name." Amen to that!
