NRT contributor Kevin Davis reflects on "True Love" by Phil Wickham during Easter week.
"True Love" by Phil Wickham offers an invitation to listeners to listen to the story of the Gospel and in the end offers a plea and a challenge. The song is from Phil’s album Cannons and is an amazing song of worship to our King and Savior Jesus. I could think of no better song to reflect on during Easter week than "True Love."
The song comes right from the Gospel. Take a few moments and reflect on the powerful words of John 19:28-35:
The Death of Jesus 28Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." 29A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips. 30When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. 31Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. 33But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. 35The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.
"There’s no big story or occasion in my life that caused me to write this song," says Phil Whickham. "It simply was written to share the story of God’s love to whoever would listen. The song 'True Love' is my best attempt at telling the story of Christ’s death and resurrection in a couple verses and a chorus. I wanted to have a song I could play every night that would express to other’s the best news I ever heard which is that God loves me and that He made a way for me to love Him. The bridge on 'True Love'-—every time I sing it, it's hard not to smile. 'Jesus is alive, Jesus is alive, Jesus is alive, He rose again!' It's the Easter gospel message, and it's powerful-—not because of how it was written, but because it is truth and the most exciting truth I have ever heard. I love performing it live for the same reason. I don’t ever want to leave the stage without giving people something to chew on, something to respond to. The most important question is 'what are you going to do with Jesus?'"
Come close, listen to the story
About a love more faithful than the morning
The Father gave his only Son just to save us
The earth was shaking in the dark
All creation felt the Fathers broken heart
Tears were filling heavens eyes
The day that true love died,
The day that true love died
When blood and water hit the ground
Walls we couldn't move came crashing down
We were free and made alive
The day that true love died,
The day that true love died
Search your hearts
You know you can't deny it
Lose your life just so you can find it
The Father gave his only son just to save us
Jesus is alive
He rose again
What an amazing Truth! God sent His only son Jesus to die for us just to save us! I love the ending of this song where Phil challenges you to "search your heart, and lose your life just so you can find it." For me, Easter is not about candy or dressing up and having a nice meal, but instead I think about the question Phil asks, "what are you going to do with Jesus?" This week as we prepare our hearts for Easter, you can sing this song to Jesus and know that True Love died just to save us. Don’t be sad or feel guilty, but accept Jesus and celebrate that Jesus is alive, He rose again! Happy Easter.
