In listening to Plumb's journey over the past few albums, you can hear how her life and faith is reflected in her art. On her 2015 album Exhale, you can hear Tiffany's vertical expressions of relying completely on God for His breath and Holy Spirit to sustain her.
Plumb's eighth release God Help Me EP follows the success of her previous albums Need You Now and Exhale. Those albums featured the hit songs "Need You Now," "Don't Deserve You," "Lord I'm Ready Now" and "Exhale." The songs on God Help Me continue with similar high caliber declarations of dependence on God. I had the chance to speak with Tiffany Lee (Plumb) about "God Help Me."
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
Psalm 120:1 says, "I call the Lord in my distress, and He answers me." That's a promise. I don't know about you, but I connect the most when a song can be a prayer that I can scream at the top of my lungs. "God Help Me" is that type of song. We cry out, and He always answers. Maybe we cry out for healing. Maybe it is to fix our broken marriage. Maybe it is just to breathe. No matter what it is, He is always with us, always listening, always answering. God help me to do whatever You would ask of me.
The story behind the song is that I was driving down the road in the car with my kids, and I heard this horrible sound come out of the back seat. I kind of glanced quickly to see my son Oliver, who is ten years old, holding his chest and having serious chest pains. He was absolutely terrified. As I started to pray, I heard under his breath over and over and over, "God help me, God help me, God help me."
Sometimes that's the only prayer I would pray, and I've taught my children that there's power in the name of Jesus. By just saying God's name, the enemy trembles. I wrote the song with Christa Wells and Luke Sheets. We also wrote "Need You Now" together.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Psalm 120:1(NKJV): "In my distress I cried to the Lord, and He heard me."
Genesis 2:7(VOICE): "One day the Eternal God scooped dirt out of the ground, sculpted it into the shape we call human, breathed the breath that gives life into the nostrils of the human, and the human became a living soul."
Psalm 150:6(NKJV): "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!"
James 1:18-19(VOICE): "We have a special role in His plan. He calls us to life by His message of truth so that we will show the rest of His creatures His goodness and love. Listen, open your ears, harness your desire to speak, and don't get worked up into a rage so easily, my brothers and sisters."
Lamentations 3:22-23(VOICE): "How enduring is God's loyal love; the Eternal has inexhaustible compassion. Here they are, every morning, new! Your faithfulness, God, is as broad as the day."
Ephesians 3:19-21(NKJV): "to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen."
2 Timothy 3:16-17(VOICE): "All of Scripture is God-breathed; in its inspired voice, we hear useful teaching, rebuke, correction, instruction, and training for a life that is right so that God's people may be up to the task ahead and have all they need to accomplish every good work."
What is the takeaway message?
I've said the words "God help me" so many times in the past few years. God help me to stay faithful and obedient, when I've wanted to just give up from the frustration of life, marriage, parenting challenges and personal insecurities, of anxiety, depression and fear. Sometimes it's been as simple as "God help me breathe through this moment." This song is a prayer, a sincere and simple call for help in the moments we need Him most.
I've discovered that my favorite songs are the ones I can scream out at the top of my lungs, like "Need You Now" and "Lord I'm Ready Now," and this song is definitely like those songs. I've taught my kids that when they're stuck or scared and don't know what to say, they can just say His name, Jesus. God help me. He always listens, and He's always there. My hope is that this song gives you the strength you need to cry out to Him, knowing that He absolutely will answer.
Lyrics: There is a wrestling in my heart and my mind
A disturbance and a tension I cannot seem to drive
And if I'm honest, there's quite a bit of fear
To sit here in this silence and really hear You
What will you ask of me?
Will I listen to your voice when you speak?
Help me to move
Help me to see
Help me to do whatever you would ask of me
Help me to go
(Or) God help me to stay
I'm feeling so alone here
And I know that You're faithful But I can barely breathe
God help me
Sometimes things, they are black and white
But sometimes they are not and it leaves us torn inside
And in the middle we are left to wonder
Who we are, what You want and where we're going
Oh such a mystery
I don't always understand
But I believe
Help me to move
Help me to see
Help me to do whatever you would ask of me
Help me to go
(Or) God help me to stay
I'm feeling so alone here
And I know that You're faithful But I can barely breathe
God help me
I don't know the future
It's one day at a time
But I know I'll be okay with Your Hand holding mine
So take all my resistance
Oh God I need Your grace
One step and then the other Show me the way
Show me the way
Help me to move
Help me to see
Help me to do whatever You would ask of me
Help me to go
(Or) God help me to stay
I'm feeling so alone here
And I know that You're faithful But I can barely breathe
God help me
I absolutely love Tiffany's intentionality and complete focus on God's provision in her life. Plumb's songs on Exhale and God Help Me celebrate God's breath, His Holy Spirit, being breathed into her life and her marriage. As a Christian father and husband, I can really relate to her songs about anxiety, marriage and parenthood. Tiffany is one of my favorite writers in all of Christian music because her songs are so emotional, vulnerable and authentic. Plumb is an anointed songwriter and singer, and she has a profound way of piercing my soul with her poignant words, tender singing and inspirational truths.
This song really engages me from start to finish in my own time of worship and reflection about the attributes of God. We are all in need of our great God to fix our messes and turn them into messages in some way. The beauty of grace is that it is not something we deserve or can earn, but it is a free gift from our great God. So many people can relate to the message of this great song. He is a God of infinite second chances. This song is a comforting message that there is always hope: breathe it in like oxygen, and God's hope will turn whatever you are going through into something different for His glory.
You can hear Tiffany's vertical expressions of relying completely on God for His breath and Holy Spirit to sustain her. I absolutely love Tiffany's intentional and complete focus on God's provision in her life. Continuing the discussion about how she's suffered from panic attacks, shortness of breath, and praying, "God please take this" from her song "Need You Now," this song celebrates how when we cry out "God help me," He hears us.
God pours out His mercy despite what we've done, and there's nothing we can do except trust in His Son Jesus. Tiffany writes and sings her breath, given to her by God, into this anointed new song for the church. You'll be blessed by this powerful song which is a stand-out anthem with a convicting declaration: "Help me to go, or God help me to stay, I'm feeling so alone here, and I know that You're faithful, but I can barely breathe, God help me." Amen to that!
