BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#57 - "Finally Home" by MercyMe
MercyMe frontman, Bart Millard, speaks with NRT Contributor Kevin Davis about their latest hit single, "Finally Home."

"Finally Home" is the third number one song from All That Is Within Me, which is my favorite overall album by MercyMe and one of my top 10 albums of the decade. The song is also on MercyMe's 10: Anthology, in essence a greatest hits collection commemorating the 10-year anniversary of "I Can Only Imagine," the best-selling Christian song of the decade.

It is hard to believe that is has been 10 years since MercyMe frontman Bart Millard penned "I Can Only Imagine," a touchingly personal song based on his father's early death. This breakthrough song by the down-to-earth Texas-based band has had a far-reaching impact: It has sold more than 2 million units, crossed over into multiple radio formats, and has been adopted as an anthem by hurting people around the world.

I recently got to see MercyMe in concert and afterward, I had the opportunity to interview Bart about the song. You can listen to our entire conversation here.

Please tell the story behind the song "Finally Home."

"Finally Home" was a last minute addition while we were writing for our last record. We still get so many comments about "I Can Only Imagine," written about my father after he passed away from cancer when I was 19. Lately, people have been asking if we are getting tired of the song. I am more invested in watching the reaction of people to the song than I am about myself anymore. The first few years of the song were for me, but ever since, the song has been for everyone else. Because of that, I wrote the lyrics "I’m gonna wrap my arms around my daddy’s neck and tell him that I’ve missed him," and I realized at that point, as I fell apart, that I haven't tapped into that emotion in a long time and didn't realize that I had so much emotion still pent up inside me. The guys and I were all crying as we wrote the song.

What's the main message and reaction you’ve received to the song?

It is very therapeutic for me. We call it the closure to "I Can Only Imagine." The song bookends the concept of singing about my relationship with my father. That's why the song was written. However, God has shown that His plans are bigger than ours. Since the song came out, we’ve been getting letters from people that have loved ones serving in the military and the song has given them hope and comfort. When they finally get to be with their loved ones, the military footage of reuniting with loved ones from the video that someone put together has now really been one of the main reactions we’ve been getting to the song. I’ve always had great admiration for people serving in the military and so it has been really great to have a chance to say thanks to the military for the sacrifices they’ve made.

What's your concept of what is it like in heaven?

I think it will be just like we sing in "I Can Only Imagine." Sometimes people forget about how in awe we'll be when we are the presence of God's glory. I can't fathom functioning properly. What am I going to do, am I going to dance, stand, fall to my knees, sing Hallelujah, all of our senses can't imagine what it will be like. The question of what it is going to be like in heaven really consumes my heart.

Any bible verses that tie in to the song?

Isaiah 6:1-3: In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory."

What’s one of your questions when you get to heaven?

Why are there mosquitoes?

Lyrics to “Finally Home”

I'm gonna wrap my arms around my daddy's neck
And tell him that I've missed him.
And tell him all about the man that I became
And hope that it pleased him

There's so much I want to say
There's so much I want you to know

When I finally make it home
When I finally make it home

Then I'll gaze upon the throne of the King
Frozen in my steps
And all the questions that I swore I would ask
Words just won't come yet

So amazed at what I've seen
So much more than this old mind can hold

And the sweetest sound my ears have yet to hear
Voices of the angels

I am moved by watching the video of military members reuniting with their loved ones. I am also consumed by the idea of what it will be like to be in God’s glory forever in Heaven. This song is certainly autobiographical and inspiring, but for me I break down when I spend time "imagining" what it will be like to hear "the sweetest song my ears have yet to hear, voices of the angels."

Isaiah 6:3 says "And they were calling to one another: 'Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.'"
