It Is Well is the follow-up album to Kutless' amazing worship album, Strong Tower. The new worship project, It Is Well, is a perfect blend of well-known worship songs mixed in with some fresh new originals. The heart of worship is something the band as a whole is very in tune with and love bringing that to the forefront, sharing and coming together as one to give glory to God. With the new album, the audience will be able to sing along to the classics as well as add some new favorites into their time of worship.

I got the chance to speak with Kutless' lead singer, Jon Micah Sumrall, about their #1 hit song “What Faith Can Do.” You can listen to our entire interview here.

Please tell me about the message behind the song "What Faith Can Do."

That song seems to be an example of touching people and us as a band in the “right place at the right time.” The song is all about putting all of our hope and trust in God, and the song is encouraging to us as a band. We’ve had some crazy things happen to us this past year, and the song reminds me of that picture of the two sets of footprints in the sand and when there is only one set of footprints, that’s when Jesus is carrying us. "What Can Faith Do" has become an inspirational banner song for anyone who has been struggling with major battles or life issues. It's been a huge success, and we felt very blessed when we heard stories about how the message has impacted people's lives.

Do you have a life verse or any Bible verses you used when writing this song?

My life verse is Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.

The song is based on Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

The song is also based on Matthew 11:28-30: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

What's the take-away message for listeners?

“What Faith Can Do” reminds believers that God is always here. Never forget that. In times of great happiness or great struggle, He remains faithful. Remain faithful to Him. Turn to Him and believe that nothing is impossible with God. That's what faith can do. The take-away message is to know that God cares for you personally and that He wants a personal relationship with each and every one of us. For believers, the song is a reminder about making a faithful commitment to live with the kind of faith that God calls each of us to have.

When I had the privilege to hear Kutless perform this song live with Casting Crowns (see my concert review), Sumrall shared: "This song has had an amazing response. I get e-mails saying that the song is reminding people to hold onto their faith. We serve a God who is much bigger than our struggles. What would your life look like if everything was taken away in this moment? Would Jesus be enough?"

Additionally, Sumrall quoted Corrie Ten Boom: "When we are powerless to do anything, it is a great joy that we can come and step inside the ability of Jesus.”

This is an amazing song, which really reflects the joy we receive when we don’t rely on our own understanding. But instead, we fully submit ourselves to faithfulness and trust in the ability of Jesus to lift us up, no matter what our circumstances may be.
