The title track of Fireflight's latest album is a big life lesson, lead singer Dawn Michele tells NRT's Kevin Davis.
Fireflight’s first three albums have been a thematic travelogue of sorts. While the band’s debut emphasized resiliency amidst hardship, Unbreakable focused on emerging victorious beyond such difficulty. The band's current album, For Those Who Wait, is a maturation in understanding that sometimes you don’t appreciate why you’re on the path that you’re on, lead singer Dawn Michele explains.
“A lot of times, we get bogged down thinking about things that we’re waiting for,” she says. “As soon as I get my bills paid, then things are going to be great. As soon as my family member’s not sick anymore, then things are going to be a lot better. And when we do that, we totally miss out on what’s happening in-between now and our goal. God has times of waiting in our lives because He has something for us to learn. Hard things that happen, that throw us off of our plan, become the most important things in our lives because God will take them and use them to shape our character and who we are.”
This insight not only drives the album’s dynamic title track—a defiant rocker which shatters the Unbreakable mold—it frames the entire record. “This album is filled with even more personal stories of our own, our families, friends and our fans,” relates Michele, who, along with bandmate Justin Cox, writes the band’s lyrics. “It’s our lives, our hearts, and our pain just poured out. We worked to take the things that we struggled through and faced to leave a trail of bread crumbs, in hopes that other people would be able to see what we went through and find hope in that.”
I got the great opportunity to interview Dawn Michele at the Revelation Generation Festival about current single “For Those Who Wait.” Here are the answers to the questions I asked her.
Please tell me about the message of the song “For Those Who Wait.”
This song was the first one I wrote for the new album. It basically talks about how as Christians we wait for God’s promises and His calling. We work and work, and sometimes it feels like it takes forever. We are all waiting for that day when we’ll join God in Heaven. There are things that happen along the way that discourage us. We say to God that we’ve been praying and waiting for Him to show us what comes next and it is excruciating. Somewhere along the way rocks get thrown in our path and I think God is using those things to push us along and teach us to have faith. God wants to mold us into who He wants us to become before we reach that final destination.
Do you have any Bible verses that go with the message of the song?
Isaiah 40:30-31: Though youths grow weary and tired, and vigorous young men stumble badly, Yet those who wait for the LORD will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.
How can listeners apply that message in their walks as Christians when they listen to the song?
It seems that challenges in life either bring out the best or worst in us, mostly the worst. That’s the lesson God teaches us so that we learn to rely on Him. When I was writing this song my little brother was diagnosed with seizures. I immediately left writing for the album to fly home to be with him as he ended up having surgery to remove brain cancer. It was a very difficult time for my family. I had another little brother pass away when I was younger and then we had another boy facing terrible circumstances. It was like re-living a nightmare for my family. All we could do was pray to God and support my brother and each other. Praise God!! Ever since his surgery last year my brother has been cancer free and he’s doing really well with no symptoms. We are so thankful! During those low times, learning we don’t have control can be our best lessons on how to truly learn to fully trust in God.
Another day, another waiting time
A little different, but it's still the same
I am here, where is the one I'm longing for?
I'm having trouble, feeling all alone
Will my heart ever find a home?
I want to hope but sometimes I just don't know
I know I'm not the only one
So we sing a lullaby to the lonely heart tonight
Let it set your heart on fire, let it set you free
When you're fighting to believe
In the love you can't see
Just know there is a purpose
For those who wait
I want to open my eyes
I know that all I need is time
I'm growing stronger every single day
Got to go I'll leave it to you now
Letting go of all my fear and doubt
I can't do this on my own so I give you control
The pressure makes us stronger
The struggle makes us hunger
The hard lessons makes the difference
And the differences makes it worth it
Let it set your heart on fire
This is for those who wait
The challenge for me in this song is the concept of needing to wait for God’s promises and knowing that the challenges I’ll face in this fallen world are God’s way of making my faith grow stronger in Him alone. I know many times I think I can control outcomes and want things to always go my way. Do you want to be in control? Or do you want God to reveal His plans for you by waiting on Him? Are you waiting for yourself to work things out or are you waiting for God to reveal Himself? As long as we put our trust in God, we’re“growing stronger every single day.” I love the bridge of this song and it is so challenging. As we wait on the Lord the Christmas season, put all of your faith and hope in Jesus and as the song says “let it set your heart on fire, let it set you free.”
