Having previously enjoyed many of
Josh Wilson's other hit songs from previous albums, I eagerly anticipated
See You. This album firmly establishes Josh as the premier folk style singer-songwriter in Christian music. Josh's poignant songwriting is coupled with musical excellence as each song urges me to better see God.
This album is sure to connect with all listeners who like catchy songs filled with truth and yearning for God. Josh invites you into his life in such an authentic and relatable way, you’ll feel like you are a lifelong friend after you hear this album. Josh writes about themes that cause me to hang on every word he sings, especially "Fall Apart." It’s a prayerful song that wrecks me with lyrics that reflect the cry of my own heart: "God I want to know You more, maybe this is how it starts, I find You when I fall apart." Finding God is my moments of weakness and relying on Him completely for my strength is what this song is all about.
Josh Wilson’s debut album,
Trying to Fit the Ocean in a Cup, included the Top 10 radio hit, "Savior, Please," and also included stand-out songs "3 Minute Song" and "Tell Me." Sparrow Records’ critically acclaimed singer/songwriter released his third album,
See You, last year, which includes the hit song "I Refuse" and was one of
my top 10 albums of 2011.
This is the follow-up album to his acclaimed sophomore release
Life Is Not A Snapshot, which garnered year-end awards with the hit track "Before the Morning," taking the No. 4 spot on Billboard’s Year-End Christian Songs chart and established Wilson as Billboard’s eigth most played artist on Christian radio. Bringing all his musical influences to bear—pop, folk, rock, classical, hymns, and more—
See You paints a refreshingly relevant musical palate that frames its message beautifully. With a probing spiritual curiosity and imaginative, self-examining lyrics, the album solidifies Wilson’s place among the finest song crafters of his day.
I had the great opportunity to interview Josh about his song "Fall Apart," the current hit single from See You.
Please tell me the personal story behind writing this song.
"Fall Apart" came out of a discussion with a good buddy of mine who was going through a divorce. He said it was the hardest thing he had ever gone through in his life. He didn’t want it to happen, was doing all he could do to make it not happen, but he felt helpless, out of control. He came to the end of himself, and in trying to put the pieces back together he was at a low point. Right in the middle of it, we had this really amazing conversation, and he said that even though everything was falling apart, he felt God’s presence more than he ever had. He saw how much he needed God.
When things are going well, we don’t see how much we need Him. We’re not aware. We think we’re doing great on our own. Hard times are a magnifying glass on how much we need Him. That’s when we feel God’s presence the most. Remember... He’s close to the brokenhearted, so I guess it shouldn’t really come as a surprise.
Please tell me about any Bible verses that you used to write the song.
Colossians 1:16-17: “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.”
...and Colossians 1:24-26: “I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church, of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God, the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints.”
What is the take-away message for listeners?
My friend’s situation got me thinking about times in my life when I’ve felt helpless. I’ve experienced the same thing. In those moments, I’ve most felt God’s presence in my life. This song came from the realization that when everything is going well, I forget how much I depend on and need Jesus. Sometimes it takes those incredibly difficult moments to remind us that we’re lost without Christ.
In Colossians 1 it says He’s holding the universe together! We need to remember that no matter what our circumstances, God is holding everything together. My pastor recently preached about how as soon as we call ourselves Christians and identify ourselves with Christ we are making a statement that we don’t have it all together. The reason I need Jesus is that I’m not perfect on my own. I need Him and I need His strength. Being called a Christian doesn’t mean I have it all together; it means I’ve admitted that I need Jesus. I’ve put my faith in Jesus and He is infinitely strong.
Lyrics:
Why in the world did I think I could
Only get to know you when my life was good
When everything just falls in place
The easiest thing is to give You praise
Now it all seems upside down
‘Cause my whole world is caving in
But I feel You now more than I did then
How can I come to the end of me
And somehow still have all I need
God, I want to know You more
Maybe this is how it starts
I find You when I fall apart
Blessed are the ones who understand
We’ve got nothing to bring but empty hands
Nothing to hide and nothing to prove
Our heartbreak brings us back to You
And it all seems upside down
‘Cause my whole world is caving in
But I feel You now more than I did then
How can I come to the end of me
And somehow still have all I need
God, I want to know You more
Maybe this is how it starts
I find You when I fall apart
I don’t know how long this will last
I’m praying for the pain to pass
But maybe this is the best thing that
Has ever happened to me
My whole world is caving in
But I feel You now more than I did then
How can I come to the end of me
And somehow still have all I need
God, I want to know You more
Maybe this is how it starts
I find You when
You will find me when I fall apart
Matthew Henry’s commentary on Colossians 1:24-26: "The sufferings of Paul and other good ministers made them conformable to Christ; and they followed him in his suffering state: so they are said to fill up what was behind of the sufferings of Christ. Or it may be meant not of Christ’s sufferings, but of his suffering for Christ. He filled that which was behind. He had a certain rate and measure of suffering for Christ assigned him; and, as his sufferings were agreeable to that appointment, so he was still filling up more and more what was behind, or remained of them to his share."
I love the second verse of the song: "Blessed are the ones who understand, We’ve got nothing to bring but empty hands, Nothing to hide and nothing to prove, Our heartbreak brings us back to You." So many believers still struggle with the idea that we have to prove ourselves worthy before God. Paul tells us in his letter to the Colossians that we need to rejoice in our sufferings as they bring us closer to Christ.
My prayer for this New Year in 2012 is found in the last line of this incredible song: "God, I want to know You more, Maybe this is how it starts, I find You when, You will find me when I fall apart." Amen!
Due to the incredible response to this song, Josh has started a website where listeners can post their own stories of how God held you together when you fell apart:
