The album's lead single "You Don't Know"[3] written specifically for Kierra and produced by hitmaker Rodney Jerkins[4] became a smash hit as well.I Owe You was nominated for three Stellar Awards for "Contemporary Female Vocalist of the Year," "Urban Song of the Year," and "Contemporary CD of the Year." Sheard was also nominated for multiple Soul Train Music Awards, an NAACP Image Award, and multiple Dove Awards.[5]
Though some fans expected Kierra's debut to be a more traditional affair (due largely to the musical dynasty of The Clark Sisters), I Owe You surprised many with exhuberant contemporary gospel songs like "You Don't Know" and "Let Go". Only two of the album's tracks, "Done Did It" and "Praise Offering", made reference to the aforementioned traditional style. Nonetheless, the album served to sate fans of traditional and contemporary gospel stylings alike, and Kierra's fan base widened quickly after the album's release.
