Plan to be taken on a journey with Shawn McDonald's new release, Ripen. As the title suggests, Ripen allows us a front-row seat into Shawn's continuing journey of faith as well as new developments into his music and songwriting.
Songs like "Free" speak to the longing to be free from the baggage of the past or the burdens of the present. "I Am Nothing" is a song that speaks to the deep need and thirst for God daily as well as a reminder that our lives are not fulfilled without the love of God in us. "Take Hold" encourages us to not give up in the face of trials, opposition, or when you feel alone in the world. "Perfectly Done" speaks to the insecurities we all face and that God sees us beautiful and wonderfully made. "Ready" reminds us to live daily for Christ and be ready to not only share our faith but expect Christ's return.
Ripen will again bring you deeper into Shawn's daily life, and will have you listen repeatedly, and along the way you'll find places of your soul you didn't know existed.

Repetitive But Still Solid| Posted July 01, 2007
Ripen will again bring you deeper into Shawn's daily life, and will have you listen repeatedly, and along the way you'll find places of your soul you didn't know existed. In an effort to simplify his music, Shawn's lyrics take on almost a repetitive nature with chorus consisting of few words, however, the worshipful style continues to impress and expectations are high for his third album.

I saw that someone else had said that this album is repetitive. I would agree slightly but think that this album delivers. It is worshipful and yet there are no "worship songs". Shawn really knows how to utilize different instruments. The way he uses strings on many of his albums is really beautiful. This is definitly an album worth owning. His words are profound and moving. Very Christ-centered. A solid performance.
One of a Kind| Posted March 25, 2008
Shawn's music isn't for everyone. It can turn off some people while it strikes a chord with others. His music has touched me deeply. This music only draws the listener in closer to Shawn's heart and his love of the Lord and music.

I've read many reviews on other sites about this album not being that great. I would agree that the music itself wasn't anything spectacular, but its the lyrics of his songs that catch my attention. Though I greatly enjoy the beat of Take my Hand and Gravity, and the lyrics, in other songs I found myself not paying much attention to the music, but almost completely on the lyrics. The lyrics of these songs definitely show the ripening in Shawn McDonald's life.
