Sunbreather [edit]
by Fallstar | Genre: Hard Rock/Metal | Release Date: February 12, 2021

From Portland, OR comes Fallstar, an unrestrained group of artists and musicians who draw just as much inspiration from their local punk and hardcore scene as they do from their hometown in general. "Our city is known for its global perspective, sustainable living, care for the homeless, and having ideas that challenge long-standing traditions and beliefs. So we've developed this way of thinking that is energized by our doubts and ideas. We're a west coast band, we're relaxed and not afraid of new things."

In 2013, Fallstar released their label debut "Backdraft," and have come back to Facedown Records to release their 2021 album "Sunbreather."

Sunbreather Review | Posted January 16, 2021

What You Need To Know
The genre-blending metalcore band Fallstar has just released their fourth full-length album, Sunbreather. Fallstar fans have waited six years for the band to release new music.

What It Sounds Like
Sunbreather contains a unique mix of genres such as electronic rock, rock and roll, nu-metal, and hip-hop. Screams and growls abound. Yet, lead singer Chris Ratzlaff adds hip-hop and electronic elements to diversify the music. There's something for everyone on this album to enjoy.

Spiritual Highlights
Fallstar is a voice for hope and love, which is reflected in their music. Sunbreather has great spiritual content while addressing social justice and mental health. I love the lyrics in "Chroma": "And then you will know little lamb of God/That the beast is within you/Light up." It goes with the song's message about lighting up the lives of those around you with compassion and grace. Isaiah 1:17 and Amos 5:24 come to mind on the topic of justice, especially on songs like "When Justice Cracks The Sky" and "King Lazer." I love the lyrics in "Darko," where Chris sings about the end times: "So you've got me waiting on the edge of my seat/I'm waiting for the world to end/like I'm waiting for a long lost friend."

Best Song
This record is full of diverse sounds and styles, as is expected from Fallstar. There are great songs with pop sensibility including "Waiting" and "The Meaning in the Monster." A couple of gritty, heavy songs like "When Justice Cracks the Sky" and "King Lazer" are sure to impress nu-metal and metalcore fans. "Cloud Chamber" is one of my favorites--and, hopefully, yours, too. From the relatable lyrics, the anthemic chorus, and the creative elements, the song is surely a standout. The sound isn't as heavy, but it doesn't need to be.

For Fans Of
Fight The Fade, Relent, Bring Me The Horizon

Bottom Line
I can already foresee Sunbreather being one of the most unique rock albums of 2021, thanks to Fallstar's expertise in genre-blending and provocative songwriting. There are times in the album where the lyrics are open to interpretation, which might confuse some listeners. And, there are some politically-influenced lyrics, which is up to personal preference. Yet, most of the time, the lyrics are honest and relatable. Sunbreather is a refreshing record that stands as a prime example of creativity in heavy music.
