The Question [edit]
by Emery | Genre: Hard Rock/Metal | Release Date: August 02, 2005

In 2004, South Carolina natives, Emery did something amazing: They went from near obscurity to undeniable success and popularity, all in a year's time. What spurred their sudden fame was a combination of January 2004's release of their critically acclaimed debut, "The Weak's End," and a non-stop tour schedule, including stints with everyone from Hawthorne Heights to Eighteen Visions. Now having sold over 55,000 copies of their debut release, Emery are gearing up for their new release "The Question" which is more focused, profoundly mature, and so undeniably passionate that no one will be questioning Emery's potential.

The Question is a great example of how Emery can change their style in between albums.  From the emo/pseudo-metal vibe of The Weak's End the band has made their sound a bit more tame and radio-friendly.  But so far, this is my second favorite album.  Every song has it's great momentum, the balance between sung and screamed vocals is tighter than the first album, and the great moments in each song are more memoriable this time around.  Every song differs from one another even though they all seem to connect through short musical interludes.

Emery asks the question, "where were you when I was..." (The track names complete the question.) but my question to you is, "why haven't you gotten this album yet?"  (Assuming you don't have it, but if you do then "why not listen to it again?"

There's no compromise, so remember this... | Posted August 22, 2009
...Your hands are lies, there's no more if's

I love this album. The style of music is one of my favorites now, and the entire cd is rather diverse. Musically, I think Emery surpassed this album with their latest effort, but the message here may trump all of them to date. Not enough Christian bands write openly enough to engage in lyrics that discuss how Christians approach and deal with issues like lust and temptation, or the regrets that follows after giving in to those temptations.

I find myself remembering...
How quickly lust can pretend it's love, designing words to help us believe
It's so much more than just tonight, so we have got to get this right
How quickly words can become our hands, resigning everything we believe

When I first heard Emery, it was not a style of music that I listened to at the time, but I was struck right off the bat by how honest and straight-forward they are in their writing. Of course, the music itself didn't take long to sink in and take a hold either. It's a shame that some Christians may consider Emery in the wrong for writing about certain topics or some Christians demonize the music for not suiting their traditional tastes.

Ironically enough, Emery has their own song with their take on whether or not people think their music is right or wrong. Listening to Freddie Mercury builds up the entire song to a few last words (quoted at the bottom of this review) and then just stops. It's the definition of short and sweet. They make their point and then move right into the next song, and I love it. The world would be a better place if Christians knew, acknowledged, and lived by the message here. We're not perfect, we don't claim to be, but we stand up for what we believe in. We're not going to force it down your throats, but this is who we are.

The icing on the cake, they stand behind what they write: Several years and two albums later (as of June 2009), they still (even while playing in a club with local secular bands) play this song in concert and take time beforehand to specifically address the message behind the song and their belief in Jesus Christ.

We are all the same...
People with sinning hearts that make us equal
Here's my hand, not words said desperately
It's not our job to make anyone believe

The Best Ever | Posted January 17, 2008
This has become my favorite album of all time. Emery has the most unique sound, incorporating harmony and screaming into the same songs. The things they do with two vocalists are amazing. It's one of those albums you don't just listen to certain songs of, you listen to it in order and as a whole. The album stand together rather than with some songs better than others. All of the songs are amazing and sound so much better if preceded and followed by the surrounding tracks. Emery Rocks!

Pretty nice | Posted August 31, 2007
I got The Question Deluxe Edition last night. I haven't watched the DVD yet, but I love the CD.

I chose it out of An Ocean Between Us - As I Lay Dying, 777 by UnderOath and The Changing Of Times, also by UnderOATH, because it was a special edition. It really sucks cause were I get all my music from restocks what went out of stock in a week every 4 months or so. So everything was restocked, and I only had $25 and it's The Big EXO Day tomorrow, which I've got to pay for. So yeah.

It's a pretty good album. Diverse lyrics and diverse vocals. And also the sweetest album artwork I've seen so far. The reason why I still buy the albums physically. And you get DVD and stuff as well.

Yeah, it's awesome.
