From its humble beginnings Virgin Black’s self-titled Demo exceeded all expectations. Initially intended purely for local Adelaide promotion only, the strength of the recording had people demanding its release and it eventually was sold throughout the world-wide underground and also blessed the compilation CD “Falling On Deaf Ears” with three of its tracks which gained it further distribution. Recorded in an era when demos really sounded like demos, Virgin Black’s first studio foray has admirably stood the test of time in respect to both its material and sound quality. The tracks “Mother Of Cripples” and “Anthem” could certainly be viewed as “classic” Virgin Black songs with “Mother Of Cripples” even featuring in the sets for the 2003 shows in the U.S. and Europe. Such is the force of its “classic” status that the band has insisted that the re-release due sometime in the near future must not be tampered with in regards to re-mastering and the like.
