A good martial artist attacking from all angles, Red Cloud fearlessly uses every aspect of his identity to attacks the tracks. As a Mexican-American Indian, martial artist, reggae lover, and underground rapper with a wry sense of humor, Red Cloud creates potentially one of the most revolutionary discs in Christian music because nothing gets checked at the door.
While not mindbending like Soul-Junk or the Danielson Familee, the diversity, creative freedom and wackiness of this disc shouldn't be understated. Using a hypnotic, staccato flow, Red Cloud rips it in Wu-Tang Clan-like detail, over a dope mid-tempo beat and catchy chorus on "When Kenpo Strikes," recalling the '70s classic "Everybody Was Kung-Fu Fighting." The man then takes it to the streets with Playdough of Ill Harmonics for the DJ's dream, "Red Cloud by Day" and to the Islands with Christafari's Tansoback on "Musical Aggression." Not to be missed is the funny and bizarre stalker role-playing of "The Pigeon John Song" (don't worry, PJ is in on the joke--it comes off like pro-wrestling).
Red Cloud also turns deadly serious on "Koyote Gospel" as he unblinkingly recalls the painful history of indigenous people with the U.S. and colonial Christianity as well as the transcending redemption of the Cross. While a little "off-the-mark" in a only a few spots, Is This Thing On? is simultaneously poignant, funny and whacked-out.
