This EP establishes Phil as an accomplished singer/songwriter, who not only composes catchy melodies, but also writes lyrics that are meaningful and relevant to the times. The first song, "Captain of my Soul," refers to the William Earnest Henley's poem, "Invictus" and describes the feeling of being inspired and supported throughout life, whether that inspiration and support come from God, family, friends, or just that something inside that drives you. "Green Paper" is about money and not letting it control you. Especially with this economy, when people are losing money left and right, it's important to remember that it is just green paper, and to take a step back and return to your roots and focus on what's really important in life. The last song, "Shine," illustrates coming back after a struggle. Life is full of ups and downs, but instead of focusing on the lows, focus on the good things you still have, and remember that it will get better. Life is not about the destination, but the journey. Phil brings up these themes, among others, in his second EP. In these trying times, this EP could almost serve as a stirring soundtrack. While the topics sound heavy, don't be fooled. The music is still upbeat, memorable, and wonderfully crafted.
