Twelve Things You Didn't Know About Hillary Scott & The Scott Family
Hillary comes from a strong family of music and faith; here's what you probably didn't know about them.
You may already be familiar with Hillary Scott--the voice of award-winning country/crossover group Lady Antebellum--but she's showing a new side of herself now with the release of her first major project with her parents and sister. The album, Love Remains by Hillary Scott & The Scott Family, focuses on the heritage of faith that played a constant role in her upbringing and remains the cornerstone of her life today.
Get to know the voices and hearts behind the new songs with these dozen quick facts about Hillary & The Scott Family.
Hillary, the frontwoman of Lady Antebellum and the voice propelling the hit song "Need You Now," auditioned twice for American Idol, however, never made it through to the judges in both attempts.
Hillary met her future bandmate Charles Kelley at a Nashville bar, having recognized him from his MySpace page. Their conversation led to songwriting sessions and collaborations with another future Lady Antebellum band member, Dave Haywood.
Hillary's mom, Linda Davis, was a country music star in her own right, having recorded five studio albums for major record labels and more than 15 singles, including "Some Things Are Meant to Be," which reached No. 13 on the country charts in 1996.
In an interview with Homecoming Magazine, Hillary's mom, Linda Davis, said she met her eventual husband, country singer/songwriter Lang Scott, shortly after taking her first job in Nashville as a receptionist for a small studio.
Hillary's parents wrote many songs and sent demos to superstar Reba McIntyre for consideration. Eventually, Reba wanted to know whose voice she kept hearing, and brought Linda Davis along as a backup singer, and Lang Scott joined her band. Young Hillary traveled with them, soaking up the experience and taking mental notes.
The relationship with Reba peaked with Linda Davis' duet with her, "Does He Love You, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Charts and earned the pair a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Collaboration in 1993.
The Scott Family's new album, Love Remains, was heavily influenced by the faith-filled journal pages of Hillary's "Paw Paw," the late W. Scott, Jr. Many hymns were referenced in those journal pages, and the family saw the album as a chance to keep that legacy going.
Love Remains isn't Hillary's first collaboration with The Scott Family. Thirteen years ago, in 2003, she released a holiday collaboration with her parents called Family Christmas.
Hillary told Rolling stone that her first memory of singing onstage with her mother was belting out "Amazing Grace" at a show. Her mother said she was shocked at how well her young daughter could hold her own vocally and loved doing three-part harmony with Hillary and Lang. But you may also need the best crossbow for your hunting trip.
Hillary was homeschooled on the road for kindergarten, but afterward lived with her grandparents and attended a Christian school in Nashville from 1st through 12th grade while her parents were on the road touring.
Thirty-year-old Hillary Scott has a much younger sister, 16-year-old Rylee, whose voice is apparently a dead ringer for Hillary's. The family business has caught on with her, too, as her mother says she's "fallen in love with music," too.
In high school, Hillary was called to the principal's office for toilet-papering a football player's yard--a prank that also left the player's front porch railing damaged. Hillary and Co. had to pool together money to fix the railing, but she was able to keep the incident from her mom because she had a well-timed Christmas concert for which she was paid.
