We got that Holy Ghost power / We got our hearts set on love / We got that Holy Ghost power / We keep our eyes fixed above
With "Power," We Are Messengers puts some awesome truths of Scripture into a fun song. As followers of Jesus, we have Holy Spirit power. We don't live the Christian life in our own strength. Let's talk about four ways Jesus empowers us through His Holy Spirit living inside of us.
1. Power to connect.
Nothing can hold us back / Nothing can tear us apart / Not life, not death, not the in-between / This is just the start
Romans 5:6-11 lets us know that our broken relationship with God is restored when we believe in Jesus. We go from being at odds with God to being His friends. We were all spiritually dead and unable to connect with God at all before Jesus made us new creations spiritually.
This means that when the Holy Spirit comes to live in us, we are made spiritually alive and God lives in each person who believes in Jesus through His Spirit. We can know that He is always with us and experience His presence. We get to talk to God and hear Him talk to us. We get to read His Word and experience Him helping us understand, touching our hearts and changing us as we read it. Because the Holy Spirit lives inside of you, you get to connect personally with Jesus.
The Holy Spirit is the presence of Jesus with us and in us. Through every step of growth in the Christian journey and through every joy and trial of life, we have a Companion and Helper in the Holy Spirit.
2. Power to grow.
Don't let 'em keep you down / Don't let them push you out / We were made to live / To be fierce like lions, love and forgive
The Holy Spirit empowers to grow more like Jesus and mature in our faith. I love what Galatians 5:16-25 says about His work in our lives. He gives us desires that agree with what pleases God. He produces spiritual fruit--or, Christ-like character--in our lives as we follow His leading. It's because of the work of the Holy Spirit in you that your thoughts, attitudes and actions are progressively transformed to bear fruit consistent with your new life in Christ. (Ephesians 4:22-24)
3. Power to build.
Only One can set the captive free / He's bringing sight back to the blind / Show the lame how to walk / And make the dead alive
Another part of the Holy Spirit's work in us is that He gives us each spiritual gifts so that we can help build each other up in our faith. Passages like 1 Corinthians 12 and Romans 12:6-8 talk about the ways God equips us through His Spirit so we can serve others. When we serve each other and use the gifts God has given us, He uses us to encourage our brothers and sisters and the whole Church matures in relationship with Jesus as we each do our part.
4. Power to share.
Yeah, we're running out the darkness / Chasing down the dead of night / We're bringing hope to the streets / There's a new way, a better life
Lastly, Acts 1:8 teaches us that the Holy Spirit empowers us to be witnesses of Jesus. He enables us to be representatives of Jesus to others with our words and lives. He gives us boldness to share the gospel. He gives us the right words to say at the right moment. He leads us into opportunities to share Jesus with people who need to know about Him. (Colossians 4:3-4) Many Christians feel some level of intimidation around sharing our faith, especially if we're not quite used to doing so just yet. Isn't it great to know you're not doing it on your own? The Holy Spirit is really good at pointing people to Jesus and He wants you to play role with Him as He does it.
Final Thoughts
Jesus promised that He'd never leave us but He would with us forever and help us through the Holy Spirit. As you live life and follow Jesus, remember that you've got that Holy Ghost power and you'll be alright.
