Love & the Outcome is made up of husband and wife duo Jodi King and Chris Rademaker. They made an immediate mark on the Christian contemporary music scene with their debut album, featuring hit songs "He is With Us" and "King of My Heart." That album chronicled their journey of having departed their homeland of Canada and risking it all to pursue their musical dreams. Many of the songs reflect the need to rely completely on God's sovereignty to guide their "outcome."
The duo returned with their sophomore offering These Are the Days, which was preceded by the hit song "The God I Know." You Got This, the duo's latest offering, once again showcases not only the band’s gifts as songwriters but Jodi’s shimmering, emotion-laden voice. She is a great role model for girls. The EP's songs address the pressures of life and express that true happiness and identity only comes from our relationship with God. I had the great opportunity to interview Jodi about “You Got This.”
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
We wrote this song out of a vulnerable moment I had with God. It's a vivid memory for me. I realized that if I had doubts or questions, or if my journal wasn’t neat, pretty, and tidy with trust prayers that I was failing as a Christian. Then I hit this moment of being a new mom on the road with a six-week-old son. And, I did it again 18 months later. We just kept touring with two kids on the road.
In writing this song, our co-writers asked us, ‘Where are you guys at? What have you been doing?’ And I was like well I tried to put on my skinny jeans, and I couldn’t zip them up. Chris made me coffee and I spilled it on myself. Ziggy, my son, spit up on me in the middle of it all. I was falling apart.
I felt like a failure as a mom and as an artist: two of my favorite things to be. I was vulnerable and at the end of myself. I yelled to Him: ‘You got this God because I don’t.’ And that was it. I could really sense the Holy Spirit and God letting me know that I don’t need to hold it all together. He's the one that does it. That’s the story behind writing this song.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Psalm 91:1-2(NKJV): "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust."
Psalm 63:4(VOICE): "I will bless You with every breath of my life; I will lift up my hands in praise to Your name."
Psalm 139:5(VOICE): "You have surrounded me on every side, behind me and before me, and You have placed Your hand gently on my shoulder."
2 Timothy 1:7(NKJV): "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
Hebrews 11:8(VOICE): "By faith Abraham heard God's call to travel to a place he would one day receive as an inheritance; and he obeyed, not knowing where God's call would take him."
1 John 4:4(NKJV): "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."
John 15:5(NKJV): "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing."
Matthew 17:20(NIV): "He replied, "Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."
I realized that God doesn’t care if I perform in my skinny jeans or my pyjamas. He does the work. I just need to show up. Just showing up has become my words to live by. I just keep showing up sharing this truth with others. I tell them, "No matter what season you're in or how messy your circumstances are, all you're asked to do is to show up as yourself, so He can use you as you are." That can be the testimony of how much we need Him.
"You Got This" is about walking by faith. For us, steps of faith are so integral to our journey, our season, and our trust in God. For Chris and me, it’s been about putting feet to our faith. Every time we have a baby or our situation changes. Or, every time we're tempted to play it safe or sit back, God says it’s time to walk by faith again. And, He says it’s going to look different than what we've walked through before. I think that’s beautiful.
When I stop having new testimonies, new stories, and new songs that come from those new moments, I know I’ve probably stopped digging in with the Lord. He’s always doing something new in us. The only time I don’t sense that is when I’m not joining in with Him in it.
Lyrics
Have you ever had one of those days When nothing really goes your way Then you see it wasn't meant to You get a new view, yeah, yeah Everybody has sleepless nights Lost in the worry Will it work out all right Feels like I'm going crazy Stressed out, praying, yeah, yeah
I know it's not a lot Know it's not a lot I give You all I've got Give You all I've got I know it's true I can count on You
I don't know the way But You got this Gimme the faith That You got this Even today, You got this I know that I know God I know that You got this You got this
Caught up in the same mistakes You catch my fall When I fall on my face I'm learning slowly God, You show me, yeah yeah
There's a better way There's a better way I give You everything Give You everything I know it's true I can count on You
I don't know the way, but You got this Gimme the faith, that You got this Even today, You got this I know that I know God I know that You got this You got this
Gimme the faith That You got this Even today, You got this I know that I know God I know that You got this
Breathe in Breathe out Feels good To shout it out Shout it out
Breathe in Breathe out Feels good To shout it out Shout it out
I don't know the way But You got this Gimme the faith That You got this Even today, You got this I know that I know God I know that You got this
You got this Gimme the faith That You got this Even today, You got this I know that I know God I know that You got this
I know that I know That I know that You got this I know that I know That I know that You got this
Closing Thoughts
Jodi and Chris have consistently impressed me with their mature faith and sincere desire to serve Jesus. "You Got This" is based on several biblical truths, including 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
Whatever struggle or depression you're facing, you can know that God is with you, always. This is the truth. Like David's prayers and songs captured in the Psalms, when you allow this truth to sink in, it changes how you think. Step out in faith and trust in God—even when you want to give up or can't see where you're going.
We aren't the power source to overcome challenges. God is our greater source that brings true power. In our weakness, God's strength is perfect. Remember, as it's said in Romans 8:21, if God is for us, who can be against us?
This song articulates what it means to live a God-centered life in a turbulent world. It's a faith statement. Righteousness was accredited to Abraham for his faith. We need to have the faith that the Bible describes in Hebrews 11:1 (NIV): "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."
I can't get enough of Jodi’s sincere vocals in this catchy, worshipful song. When you sing along, think of Jesus saying, "Why are you fearful, O' you of little faith?" Have faith, don't be afraid, and know that with Jesus, you're never alone. He's the author of our lives and knows what's best for us—much better than we do.
We're called as Christians to believe in the freedom that we have in the cross of Jesus. We're free from our addictions, our insecurities, and our perfectionism. Jesus came to die for us so that we can all truly live in Him. This song is about submitting your worries, anxieties, and stress to God, and letting Him be your guide.
Being a Christian means that we walk by faith, not by sight. Faith requires people to rely on the unseen. The beauty of walking by faith and not by sight is that we can learn to trust God with our lives. In Philippians 4:13, He tells us that with faith, we can do anything in Christ.
Followers of Jesus can sing every word and agree with the beautiful sentiments of this great song. His love is never-ending. He's our refuge and our strength. As believers, heaven is calling our name. He's real, He's near, and He's just a breath away.
No matter what you're going through, you can sing, "I don’t know the way/But You got this/Give me the faith/That You got this/Even today/You got this/I know that I know/That I know/That You got this.” Amen to that.
