NOTE: The next editorial will be posted on Friday, January 7, 2022, as the staff of NRT will be on holiday break for the following two-week period. Have a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year's celebration!
Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. Below, we listen to a few highlights and list the rest for your own discovery. As always, follow our New Christian Rap & Hip Hop playlist on Spotify and Apple Music to listen to all the latest.
DROPOUT by Henrik (Maxi Single)
NXT MOVE's Henrik ends 2021 with the release of two singles, "DROPOUT" and "CHRIST OVER EVERYTHING." Innovation took center stage, as Henrik continues to infuse rock elements into his art. These two singles possess more of a punk rock vibe than organic hip-hop. They put you in mind of something from Stellar Kart, Hawk Nelson, or Relient K. Mogli the Iceburg from the indie tribe. collective is most known for the combination of rock and hip-hop in this space.
Both singles are drenched in Henrik's personal faith and expression of the spotlight role God takes within his life. The lyrics bleed hope and faithfulness regardless of what situation one may face. The anime-based cover art for this single and most of Henrik's releases are quite impressive too. Steam DROPOUT on Spotify here.
Nu Tone feat. Gabby Callwood - "Angel City"
If you were not familiar with Nu Tone before 2021, he should be a household name by now. This year, he's released 22 singles, an EP, and two albums. One aspect of his art I appreciated is the inclusion of the hottest indie rappers and vocalists most are not familiar with. Through partnerships such as these, Gabby Callwood is growing in notoriety and popularity, as I know she's one of my top artists of 2021. Callwood lends her harmonies during this effort balancing out the single as one of Nu Tone's best throughout the year. Each complements the other's voice and overall flow. Also, she released her own single today ("Gentiles") and was featured on a track with GamFam. Both are equally worthy of a listen. Stream "Angel City" on Spotify here.
Apex Frazier feat. A3 - "So Weak"
Two upcoming independent artists in the CHH space link together to spotlight their talents. The production also deserves attention, as I love the use of an acoustic guitar and some horns (maybe). The combination of the harmonies and raw emotional outpour is encouraging; even putting off a worship-like vibe to the overall experience. Honestly, we need more artists like Frazier to pinpoint God's influence in their life lyrically. A strong finish to a solid year for Frazier and A3 respectfully. Stream "So Weak" on Spotify here.
