Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. Below, we listen to a few highlights and list the rest for your own discovery. As always, follow our New Christian Rap & Hip Hop playlist on Spotify and Apple Music to listen to all the latest.
J. Monty - "Holy Flow"
Indie ATL rapper J. Monty returns in 2022 with fresh music, the first since dropping the Free Me EP back in June 2021. Most consider the Free Me EP to be one of the best projects of the year. The new single continues to accent J. Monty's intricate flow smothered in personal faith and skill. His wordplay and rhyme schemes are celebrated across the genre as some of the best regardless of the track. Listeners find themselves playing the tracks multiple times to capture all the genius within. Also, his production choices align with his skill set; excellence. Stream "Holy Flow" on Spotify here.
Braille x Illumination Project - "Divorced From Reality"
Portland's Braille returns in 2022 with one of the rawest and most revealing tracks from him to date. The new single is a lament over divorce intended as a warning. Also, to induce empathy for those individuals who have suffered through the difficult process. The process of the track itself was nine years in the making as it was rebirthed four times throughout the years. As a lead pastor of a local church, Braille is one of the few leaders openly discussing divorce which seems like a "hush, hush" topic within church walls. Heartfelt piano keys drive the track as it balances emotion and storytelling at its finest. Stream "Divorced From Reality" on Spotify here.
All Love by Reece Lache'
Independent rapper Reece Lache' had a breakout year of introduction in 2021. She released an EP and 9 singles throughout the year. Her biggest recognition was a featured single on the Summer '21 Playlist compilation Reach Records released in July. The single "Down Too Long" has collected close to 170,000 streams since its release.
For 2022, Lache' begins the year with an album release. All Love only has two features, J. Monty and Jamie MacDonald. Otherwise, listeners are treated with the vocal talents both in harmony and rhyme of Lache'. Also, the album possesses a polished sound of completion.
From engineering to mastering and mixing, all working parts are at their best throughout. Other noticeable changes are found in the content itself. Lache' remains open, honest, and transparent, but the struggles seem to have shifted to more cries of victory as opposed to pain and suffering.
Standout tracks include "Stuck" featuring J. Monty, "Come To Me," and the title track. Lache' will continue to be an artist "to watch" as doors continue to slam open for her and opportunities arise. Stream All Love on Spotify here.
