Happy Valentine's Day! ‘Tis the season for roses, chocolate hearts, Valentine's Day cards, and other things red and 'hearty.' Oh, let's not forget those very delicious red cinnamon heart candies. Man, I'm getting hungry just thinking about them.
Thanks to our staff as well as the members in our Facebook group, NRT Christian Fandom, I have nine new—and some older—songs you can stream with your one and only this Valentine’s Day. Enjoy!
Skillet “Forever or the End” (2022)
In my humble opinion, Skillet is, by far, the most popular Christian rock band in the modern age. Yes, I might be a little biased, but I don’t think so. Be that as it may, the iconic group is known for their power ballads—both worship and romantic. On the worship side, you have “Stars” and “Terrify the Dark.” And, on the romance side, you have “Yours to Hold” and their newest song, “Forever And the End.” One of my favorite listening moments is when vocalist John Cooper duets with drummer Jen Ledger near the song’s end. A worthy anthem for Valentine’s Day.
How did I get here/Was it something I said/When you said forever/Is this what you meant/Is it wrong that I miss you/'Cause you never left/But the burden feels heavy/And I'm just so spent/Is this forever or is this the end
Ellie Holcomb "I Will Carry You" (2021)
Some of you are going through tough times now, thus your Valentine’s Day might not be hearty and rosy. Therefore, what you’ll need is a song of comfort and love. Contemporary artist Ellie Holcomb’s “I Will Carry You” serves as a reminder that you and your significant other are not alone in your struggles.
Ellie says it best: “My hope for every listener who hears this song—no matter what they're carrying in their lives or in their hearts right now—that they would be reminded that they are carried by the God who made them and loves them.”
You are not the sum of your mistakes/You don't have to hide the parts of you that ache/I choose you as you are a million times 'cause/I am not ashamed of you/I won't walk away from you
Cade Thompson "Dear Future Wife" (2021)
Last year, up and coming pop artist Cade Thompson dropped his single, “Future Wife,” a musical letter to a one and only to come. It’s the perfect song to play if you’re going to drop a knee on the day of hearts. Hopefully, he or she says yes. I’ll be praying for you.
Dear future wife/Gotta tell you I'm still working/On my life/I'm still trying, I'm still learning/This song is my confession/That I'm nowhere near perfection/But the God who loves us both/Is gonna make me whole
Dan Bremnes “Run Away With Me” (2021)
My wife and I love to travel. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has squashed our various attempts to do so. Even contemporary singer Dan Bremnes felt that pain. But he and his wife, Britt, scored a last-minute trip to Belize for a romantic getaway—and to shoot the music video for his romantic single, “Run Away With Me.”
Dan wrote the song with former Tenth Avenue North frontman Mike Donehey and songwriter Justin Amundrud. "I wrote 'Run Away With Me' at the height of the pandemic when all dreams felt canceled. We asked ourselves, 'Where would we go with the one we love right now?' This song is about dreaming impossible dreams in impossible times.”
Tell me what it is you want to/Do just me and you/Tell me the truth/No rules we could get lost/On some street/Dance to the beat/Let's waste some time/’Cause I'm taking you away inside my mind
Mat Kearney “Anywhere With You” (2021)
My wife and I celebrate our Meeting and Wedding Anniversaries every year. The memorial moments to these two special occasions have looked different because of lockdowns and other pandemic drama. We celebrated at home (of course, we wished we could’ve eaten at a restaurant or gone someplace far, far away. But we made moments with what he had.
Popular contemporary artist Mat Kearny wrote his latest musical offering pre-quarantine, but its meaning impacted him while under lockdown. Like Dan Bremnes, Mat longed for adventure with the family.
He said of the new song, "I never knew how much power [this song] would come to have or meaning it would take on until I was stuck at home dreaming that I could travel and experience adventure with people I love. I didn't realize how much I valued that. Maybe we all have more of an appreciation for being able to travel and experience the places we love than we did before this lockdown."
I can picture your silhouette/In the summer of no regrets/It felt like a thousand breathes a thousand steps/I knew right then and there that/I'd go anywhere with you/I'd go anywhere with you/I know you feel the same thing that I do
We Are Leo & Neon Feather “You Show Me Love” (2021)
Contemporary group We Are Leo and producer/programmer Neon Feather created a song of gratitude for God. A perfect listen to thank God for life’s blessings—including your significant other.
We Are Leo’s David Duffield said of the song, “The best way I can describe what ‘You Show Me Love’ means to me, is to think about the final scene from the first episode of season 1 of the TV drama The Chosen, where Jesus shows up and meets someone who was in a dark place. I see myself in that story: I was lost and afraid, but Jesus met me there, redeemed me, and showed me love.”
Safe/From dark waters, You rescued me/And You break/Through every wall that holds me back/And I will take/Everything You say 'cause You work for my good/And I'll praise (Love)/You show me love and I'm grateful (Grateful)
Drew & Ellie Holcomb “You And Me” (2018)
Before embarking on a solo career, Ellie Holcomb was a member of her husband’s band, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors. Since her departure, Ellie has released a few songs with her husband, Drew. One of them is the love song, “You And Me.” This song is a celebration of love. Something that you can do on Valentine’s Day with your other half.
Let's go dance with the ghosts in the cathedral/Let's go sing by the silvery sea/Raise our glass to the heroes and the poets/You're a diamond in the flames, a diamond to me
Copperlily “A Lot to Learn” (2014)
This song by husband-and-wife duo Copperlilly is a true expose of how in relationships, we can do things wrong. The lyrics say it all.
You sure are cute/And I can tell you probably mean well/But oh, you don't have a clue/You're swimming in a love spell/If you want the truth, I'll tell you in a nutshell/You've still got a lot to learn about love
The Gray Havens “Let’s Get Married” (2013)
The Gray Havens—another husband-and-wife duo—dropped this song shortly after forming the band in 2012. “Let’s Get Married” is about a young couple who want to tie the knot—despite what others say or think about their decision. I love when couples write and perform love songs together. It makes the music that much more real—beyond the lip service and formula.
We are young and full of love/And don't have much at all/But we know something more than age and wages/Tell you where you are/Let's get married!
