Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. Below, we listen to a few highlights and list the rest for your own discovery. As always, follow our New Christian Rap & Hip Hop playlist on Spotify and Apple Music to listen to all the latest.
KB x Cardec Drums feat. Mike Teezy, BigBreeze, Scootie Wop, 1K Phew, Wande, Limoblaze, Tommy Royale, and S.O. - "King Jesus, Pt. II" Sony Entertainment's KB and indie tribe.'s nobigdyl. released the original version of this single on February 25. The track included samples from a classic Vickie Winans gospel song of the 90s titled, "Long As I Got King Jesus." It's definitely one of the top singles of 2022. During the month of March, KB held an Instagram freestyle contest using the instrumental from the single. On April 16, the winners were announced as Mike Teezy, Swaizy, and Evvie. A host of prolific artists submitted verses to the challenge such as Aaron Cole, Tauren Wells, J. Monty, and others. A few weeks later, now we have a 6-plus minute part two of the single smothered with some of CHH finest emcees. The track provides the feels of something from the early 00s when hip-hop cyphers reigned the radio waves. Just one rapper after another delivering quality sixteens. The beauty of this track is the added flavor. With influence from four producers (Cardec Drums, Ace Harris, WEARETHEGOOD, DJ Tag), variety switches up as frequently as the wordsmith. Tommy Royale even adds some unique Latin flavor to the extended art form. Stream "King Jesus, Pt. II" on Spotify here.
Torey D'Shaun feat. nobigdyl. - "CATFISH" Both Torey D'Shaun and nobigdyl. linked up for one of the hottest singles of 2021 with "Scam Likely" back in March 2021. Therefore, the two emcees tag-teamed another track stamped as the certified banger of 2022. The content "CATFISH" compacted into the single runs deeper than Challenger Deep of the Pacific Ocean. Fans will be deciphering its wordplay, punchlines, and brilliance for months to come. Both D'Shaun and Dyllie leveled up with this track, as it possesses more levels than Fallout 4. Let's not surpass the creative vibes caught with the production throughout too. The minor low-frequency piano keys pounding combined with 808's are iconic to any true audiophile. The concept of seeing who God sees as your true self and not what you personally build yourself into online is an in-depth separate conversation for another time. The track is complex and spotlights two of the premier emcees in hip-hop. Stream "CATFISH" on Spotify here.
Us Against the World by God Over Money Records
For the past 12 years, God Over Money has been a staple of CHH. Regardless of trends, their artists kept the proclamation of the Gospels in the forefront of lyrics. JPMs (Jesus per minute) is a flex, as they lead all who listen back to the cross. Back to Jesus. Back to the love of our Savior. Bizzle, Datin, Bumps INF, Selah the Corner, Jered Sanders, and A.I. the Anomaly fill a roster of spirit-filled emcees. They’re not unfamiliar with controversy or persecution from around hip-hop circles. Instead of a random combined cypher of their talents, fans receive an album compilation of all six artists showcasing their skills. Three singles were released prior to the album, two being “The Rock” and “Payback.” Two hard-hitting bangers displaying skills of each of the six emcees dominating more bars than a college freshman.
Out of the 14-tracks included, standouts are "Little Light," "Way Up (Remix)," and "Bow Down." Also, "GOM Menace" introduces the newest and seventh member of the label. Throughout all the tracks, your mind, heart, and soul will be blessed. God will be glorified and Jesus is King. The formula should be standard across the sub-genre.
