Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. Below, we listen to a few highlights and list the rest for your own discovery. As always, follow our New Christian Rap & Hip Hop playlist on Spotify and Apple Music to listen to all the latest.
Lecrae - "Spread the Opps" Reach Records’ co-owner and artist Lecrae drops the first single off of the fourth and final installment in the Church Clothes mixtape series. The innovation and mainstream crossover achieved with the Church Clothes tapes has spanned over the past 10-year period. A decade later, the mission and vision remain the same for Lecrae. "Once upon a time, we had the vision to demonstrate what it looks like to be authentically hip-hop and a follower of Christ,” shares Lecrae. “We put that vision together in this project called Church Clothes; something for the streets but representing who we are as believers. Church Clothes resonated with people, and they connected with them."
"Spread The Opps," acknowledges the opposition and stands steadfast despite it. Lecrae expresses, "I've been running for so long from the opposition. Since I was a kid, there were enemies, both physical and spiritual, that were trying to destroy me. I decided to stop running. This song, "Spread The Opps," is me knowing that even in the valley of death, God is with me. He’s scattering the opposition.” Track production was shared between DrumGod, JuanRa, Simbo, and DudeClayy. Sonics include incredible vocals from AGI Entertainment students. The students range from ages 9 to 13. Stream “Spread The Opps” on Spotify here.
Roy Tosh - "Point to You" RMG Amplify’s Roy Tosh releases his third single of 2022. The track was produced by WEARETHEGOOD and the cover art was designed by JR (@zxmbiac). The synopsis of the song is based on Christians relying on God as the sole purpose for day-to-day life. If we profess Christ as our Lord and Savior, but don’t constantly point people back to Him; what’s the point? The stripped-down track possesses more of a worship vibe absent of an energetic delivery and pounding 808s. It’s Tosh’s voice, a simple, yet unique soundscape led by an acoustic guitar and a transparent version of Tosh’s voice lifting praises to God while signifying his “point”. Overall, it’s a quite satisfying change of pace. Stream “Point to You” on Spotify here.
polaroids. by Wes Harris x Sarah Nathalié
Northeast Florida independent rapper Wes Harris teamed up with Tampa’s Sarah Nathalié on a collaboration project. Prior to the album’s release, two singles were released – “bounce back.” And “look alike.” The cohesion and blended sound these two create is impeccable. On one end, you have the positive energy and bounce of Harris’ delivery complimented by the silky smooth and calm melodies of Nathalié. The lethal combination created a beautiful album from start to finish.
Personal favorites from the album include “who.,” “golden hour.,” and “portrait.” The production aspects of the project is top-notch. The energy of hip-hop laced with pop-infused R&B is brilliant. The innovative soundscape is worth a listen in itself. I have a feeling this album will be on repeat for a minute, at least until Church Clothes 4 releases. Stream polaroids. on Spotify here.
