Promoting life at all stages has always been a cornerstone of the Christian movement. Last year, I wrote an article listing songs that directly addressed the importance of life, given the things we face in our world and our country. Here are a few more inspirational pieces you can add to your playlist.
Trip Lee - "Beautiful Life"
Confronting abortion and parenthood head-on, Christian hip-hop artist Trip Lee addresses the responsibilities of the mother and the father facing an unplanned pregnancy. While treating them with respect and dignity, he provides a courageous call to respect the child's right to live in the womb and that child's inherent worth and blessing.
Sanctus Real - "Lead Me"
One of the leading factors contributing to the widespread acceptance of abortion in our culture is the absenteeism of many fathers. The deadbeat dad stereotype is all too often based on a sad reality. Young men are often labeled slaves to impulses, drives, and laziness. This rare song from Sanctus Real addresses the responsibilities of being a husband and father that young men and fathers can directly relate to.
Songwriter Matt Hammitt's signature message is conveyed through his powerful anthem that calls on young men to trust in God's guidance and cherish their families as gifts from the Lord. The song carries a profound message, urging men to prioritize their families and honor them as blessings, not burdens.
Mark Schultz - "Everything To Me"
In this very personal song, contemporary artist Mark Schultz pays tribute to his adoptive mother, crafting one of the most poignant odes to adoption ever penned. It’s an inspiring reminder of a mother's selfless choice to give her child up for adoption and its positive impact on a child's life. Mark's personal experience highlights the value of life and the gift of adoption, inspiring hope and encouragement for those facing unwanted pregnancies. Children don't have to be limited by the circumstances of their conception, and all the fear and uncertainty they face can be turned into a vibrant and full life.
Steven Curtis Chapman - "When Love Takes You In"
This song celebrates the joy and hope of being adopted. Contemporary music veteran Steven Curtis Chapman wrote the music for his adopted daughters, describing the feelings of joy both from the point of view of the adoptive parents and the adopted child. To those considering ending unwanted pregnancies, remember that many families want to share their hearts and homes with those children.
Casting Crowns - "So Far To Find You"
Contemporary music icon Casting Crowns penned “So Far to Find You,” a beautiful ode to adoption. The song's themes of love and reassurance speak to the love of an adoptive parent for their child and Christ's love for us. In an age where life is often trivialized and thrown away, it's a powerful reminder that there are others here with us who will love and treasure the unwanted and never-ending and unshakable love our creator and savior have for each one of us.
Matthew West - "One Less"
Contemporary artist Matthew West has been one of the more consistent voices for life in Christian music. Besides songs speaking directly to the value of unborn life in "Untold" and "Unplanned," Matthew's song "One Less" is a powerful love letter to adoption. The song acknowledges the harsh reality that many children are abandoned and left without a family to call their own. But at the same time, loving arms are left empty, searching for someone to hold. The song speaks to the beauty of those two findings with each other and forming a beautiful new family.
Ellie Holcomb - "Mine"
Contemporary singer-songwriter Ellie Holcomb wrote a song for her kids that speaks to a parent's simple and profound love for their child. Acknowledging the humanity of her children from the moment God created them, Ellie sings, "before I held you, I knew I loved you." The song can be a simple reminder for unexpected mothers of the beauty of motherhood. It's a higher calling and an enriching experience for those who can accept the gifts with grace. Ellie’s song can help mothers escape the fear of the unknown and into the beauty of shepherding new life.
