Josh Baldwin is a singer and songwriter hailing from North Carolina. His integral role in the Bethel Music Collective has opened up opportunities for him to lead worship both domestically and internationally. His solo project is a simultaneous creative outlet and is most notably recognized by his hit, "Stand In Your Love."
His recent release is a full-length album, Where The Glory Is, which highlights his experiences following the path of the Lord. I dive into two songs off this record, below.
I See The Light
And I'm walkin' in the valley of dry bones
Where resurrection power starts to grow
The breath of God now in my lungs
I'll prophesy, His light has come
Listening to the lyrics of this song felt like finding an oasis in the desert. Cliché as that may be, Josh truly produced a masterpiece that reflects the love of God. He shares this hope with everyone, including the listeners who may have yet to discover the love of our Savior.
The light has come, even though we may not see it yet. To be honest, I can't tell if that statement is defeating or encouraging and I feel the same way about my faith sometimes. I trust Jesus with all my heart, but the side of not being able to see Him work can bring me down. I would consider this one of Satan's most difficult tests for the followers of Jesus. Do we really believe it when we can't see it? Of course one day, we will get to sing this anthem of God's goodness from the mountain, but that moment might not be right now for you. That's okay; Jesus will still come through. He doesn't unfairly share His light and if that's not encouragement enough, look back on what He has done for you. Those were not one-time occurrences, and I am confident that God will use this reflection to soon have you singing, "Hallelujah/Hope is alive/I see the light."
Narrow Road
I will walk wherever You're leading
Cloud by day and a fire by evening
You're the lamp that's guiding my feet
So I can see where I am going
Josh starts this anthem with a vivid description of a weary soul and it's this empathy that makes his music so impactful. As a listener, I felt seen and I heard God's message delivered through the worshipful song with clear beauty.
It took me quite some time to grasp the concept of the "narrow road" Jesus calls us to walk down. He has taught me recently that it's simply the journey we embark on to Heaven. Because we follow God as Lord, there is no room for other idols; it is a path few choose to take. The world is the highway and we're winding through the countryside on a one-way road to Jesus. Josh sings "The journey might be lonely but I'd never be alone." This is a promise Jesus provides the second we choose salvation. All the talk of it being narrow is not to say we are not allowed to mess up; it just means that when we do, Jesus will be there to redirect our focus back to Him. I couldn't ask for a better situation because those idols of the world never fill me up anyways. Jesus provides and it is His path I choose today, narrow as it may be.
