Through hit songs "Into the Sea (It's Gonna Be Ok)" and "Look What You've Done," you can tell that Contemporary Christian recording artist Tasha Layton has experienced the power of the Lord in her life and is dedicated to sharing His faithfulness with the world. Deeper than the popularity she has gained is the love she conveys in her music. Her melodies are catchy, yes, but her lyrics are truthful; that's where I find the funneled passion in her music. Here's a look at two songs from Tasha's recently released album, This Is Christmas. Welcome to the Christmas season. Let the festivities begin.
"Rocking Around The Christmas Tree"
"Rockin' around the Christmas tree Have a happy holiday Everyone dancin' merrily In the new old-fashioned way"
Tasha's joyful take on this Christmas classic put me into the "Christmas spirit." I must admit to being someone who steers clear of Christmas music until the morning after Thanksgiving. But I figured pressing play a few weeks earlier couldn't hurt. This song made me so grateful that I took that chance. Put aside your hesitation about the holiday season if only for a few minutes and let this give make you dance in the "new, old-fashioned way." Tasha's incredible vocals and her improvisation near the song's end give "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" an original flair.
"This Is Christmas"
"Long awaited
Christ our Savior
Hallelujah
This is Christmas"
We all know the tunes that define Christmas, so much so that I don't think I need to list them here. Far from overplayed, "This is Christmas" is a fresh melody that deserves more circulation on everyone's Christmas playlist.
While it is always fun to dance around to easy lyrics and iconic holiday melodies (as I did with the previous song), there's no harm in slowing down to focus on the true message of Christmas. I would argue that there's an abundance of perspective to be gained by doing this. On this note, I found the theme of this song to be inspiring. The beautiful instrumentals and breathtaking vocals were proof I needed to wholeheartedly believe in Tasha's worth as a music artist. But that's not where her worth lies.
Rather, the monumental words, "This is Christmas," reveals that her worth rests in her identity as a child of God. This song shares that position of favor in the Lord's eyes for all the world to see; it's a reminder of God's love for everyone and how we are called to worship Him. Furthermore, the lyrics are a push out of stale holiday traditions into a new encounter with our Heavenly Father. I pray that you'll let revelation define this season as we walk into the season with a new perspective, "With songs of the angels now filling the sky/Our hope has arrived."
