The Christian rock and metal scene is far from dead or dying as bands and artists continue to produce incredible music in 2023. While we hold some nostalgic records dear, it would be criminal to ignore the current talent in the scene. Independent artists are putting out impressive polished, and well-produced music, and record labels like Facedown Records and Rockfest Records are partnering with influential bands. Here are some of the best releases you should check out from the last few months.
Skillet - Dominion: Day of Destiny
Skillet has been one of the most consistent rock bands in the scene for over 20 years. Their 11th studio album, Dominion, released in early 2022, continued to propel them forward in their career. Their tradition of deluxe editions continues this year with Day of Destiny. The collaboration with Adam Gontier, former lead vocalist of Three Days Grace, on a re-recorded version of "Finish Line" from 2019's Victorious album, is a standout. This definitive version of modern Skillet's music is worth a listen.
Fallstar - "Doomsayer"
Facedown Records has a lot of unique rock bands on its roster, and Fallstar is no exception. Their sound is often incomparable in style yet remains heavy and tackles current issues head-on. "Doomsayer" is the first single from their sixth studio album, Sacred Mirrors, coming in July 2023. The track explores a post-modern society in America with a touch of hope. This is turning out to be an excellent year for Facedown Records album releases, and I'm excited to hear more from Fallstar.
Cliffside - "Forever"
I love sharing the products of the hardworking, independent Christian metal scene, and Cliffside is no exception. It's been four years since their incredible EP, Wilderness, and their new single, "Forever," is worth a listen. It’s their best song yet, showcasing excellent musicianship and songwriting. They deserve all the attention they can get, and I can't wait to hear more from them.
