Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. Below, we listen to a few highlights and list the rest for your own discovery. As always, follow our New Christian Rap & Hip Hop playlist on Spotify and Apple Music to listen to all the latest.
nobigdyl. - "PRESIDENT" Tennessee native and founder of the indie tribe. collective, nobigdyl. drops his first single of 2023. As usual, the media rollout leading up to the release date was nothing short of brilliant. The presidential-like skits and photos were top-tier. The basis for this single and campaign date back a few years. From the lyrics of Dyllie's 2019 single "STIX," he references running (for president) in 2024. The bars flow as, "2024, I'm runnin', yeah (I'm runnin') / Might make my baby (wife) my VP uh (my VP)."
"PRESIDENT" was produced by Carvello and mixed by AC. Dyllie is "that guy".Not just in 2024, but overall in hip-hop. He always snags "A-Listers" for production duties. His flow, delivery, usage of metaphors and wordplay, as well as breath control, are undeniably contributions towards the best of the genre (CHH or mainstream). Dyllie is not only my favorite emcee but has gathered the votes of thousands for the same title.
Carvello outdid himself on this one with 808s powerful enough to blow the roof off the white house. Also, the delicately intertwined echoes from bells are fantastic. Favorite bars include, "I think I heard a little Opp / hand me the ESV / I need to speedily send him back to his Pop (God)." Stream "PRESIDENT" on Apple Music here.
Tylynn - "SAY AMEN"
Nebraskan rapper, songwriter, and singer Tylynn is making waves in 2023. She's already dropped two EPs and now her third single. She accompanied the release of the single with a series of videos on Instagram asking what the term "Amen" means to people. The dictionary defines the term as "so be it", an ending.
The latest single is a comprehensive display of both Tylynn's singing and rhyming talents. The track possesses a sense of worship stirred up with poignant bars. It's a praise party for answered prayers as believers trust in the Lord and His Will coupled with our own hard work and Kingdom drive. The sonic value of the single is pristine. A correlated mixture of synthesizers, horns, and minute surprises. Stream "SAY AMEN" on Apple Music here.
I'd Go To Hell For You by A3
Texan rapper and songwriter A3 releases his sophomore album, his most personal artistic adventure yet. He brilliantly infused the soundscapes of hip-hop and pop adding creative details hidden throughout. The concepts behind the album are soaked in biblical context from the books of Romans (chapters 8 and 9 specifically). A3 describes the album by stating, "This new body of work represents me at the moment. My learning how to think, live, and what it means to be a living sacrifice for the sake of the Kingdom of heaven. This is my life's mission. I am for the people. I am for the gospel of Jesus Christ." At a recent bible study, A3 was asked, "Would you go to hell for someone else so they could receive what you have received?" The idea of being a living sacrifice and offering self to free others is incredible and the storyline for the project.
The album is eight tracks in length with a couple of artsy interlude-like songs within. Sonically, it's moving, experimental, and beautiful honestly. Only a few features exist including Rhomar Jessy, 350, and Christian Aparicio. Immediate favorites of choice are "More Than Conquerors," "Flex My Peace" featuring 350, and the title track. The energy contained regardless of the track is unmatched. Every song is a vibe, that could easily slide into a gym or workout playlist, and just serve as heart-driven motivation to rock your faith as loudly as possible.
Most similar music from young artists is more focused on the production and ability solely to be placed in mainstream media. However, A3 takes the best of both worlds. His content satisfies the current sound on mainstream radio, but directs listeners to the path of righteousness as opposed to those of this world. Stream I'd Go To Hell For You on Spotify here.
