For over two decades, Christian contemporary artist John Burland has dedicated his life to creating inspiring religious music for children and adults. The Australian artist wears many hats: a Catholic composer, musician, and educator. He’s recorded over 300 recorded songs and 16 published music collections.
His music has become a fixture in primary and secondary school and parish communities in Australia, New Zealand, the U.S., the United Kingdom, and Canada. His contributions to liturgical music have also been recognized globally. Two of his compositions, "Come O Holy Spirit" and "Lord By Your Cross," are included in Sydney's official 2008 World Youth Day liturgies.
Here are John’s thoughts on songs from his latest album, Into the World.
“Holy Spirit Set My Heart on Fire” (Acts 2:1-4)
“Holy Spirit Set My Heart on Fire” is an upbeat song of praise that proclaims the gift of the Holy Spirit. The song asks the Spirit to work through us, take us to a higher place, and help us experience God’s love. With its worship of the Spirit, the song is a great accompaniment to Pentecost and Confirmation celebrations, as well as general prayer and reflection.
“Blessed Are You” (Matthew 5:3-12)
“Blessed Are You” is a melodic expression of one of the most beautiful pieces of scripture, the Beatitudes. This is a song that will resonate with many people. It inspires us to contemplate the values Jesus taught us and how we might incorporate them into our daily lives. This song is an evocative reminder of the blessings and salvation we can receive by following the Word of the Lord.
“Into the World” (Matthew 5:14-16)
Written as a contemporary graduation or farewell song, “Into the World” conveys hope as we take God’s light into the world. The song empowers us to be bold and have the courage to make a difference in the lives of others, knowing that God will be alongside us every step of the way.
“Rise Up and Don’t Hold Back” (Luke 1:38-39)
Written for World Youth Day 2023, “Rise Up and Don’t Hold Back” is an energetic track celebrating the power of joy, Mary's beauty, and the gift of the Eucharist. Featuring vocals from songwriter Taylor Tripodi, the song calls on those descending upon Lisbon this year to recognize their role in spreading God’s love throughout the world.
“Father, Let Me Know You” (Matthew 5:16)
A song for personal prayer and reflection, “Father Let Me Know You” is a stirring ballad that celebrates our desire to understand and experience God's affection and infinite love. The song emphasizes the transformative power of vulnerability and the comfort of asking God for strength and direction. “Father Let Me Know You” is a tribute to our longing to know God more intimately.
“Not Me But God”
Based on the life of the amateur computer programmer Blessed Carlos Acutis, “Not Me But God” celebrates the key messages of Carlos’ life and mission. The song is an ode to Carlos’ selflessness and deep devotion to the Eucharist and encourages us all to reflect on his example and to continue to place God at the center of our being.
“Lord, Shine Your Light on Me Today” (Matthew 11:27)
An emotive song for personal prayer and reflection, “Lord Shine Your Light on Me Today,” asks God to show us His grace and presence in our hearts. The song is an opportunity for us to surrender to Him and to be guided toward the path He has chosen for us.
“You Are the One”
A song close to my heart, “You Are the One” is a contemporary Christian wedding song that celebrates love and the sacrament of marriage. I wrote the song for my daughter Daniela’s wedding in October 2022. Featuring vocals by Christian songwriter Taylor Tripodi, the song is about finding the person you’re meant to be with and the happiness that comes from giving your life to another.
“Holy is His Name (Magnificat)” (Luke 1:46-56)
Using the exact words of scripture, “Holy is His Name (Magnificat)” is a contemporary interpretation of the Magnificat. With its liturgical nature, the song is Mary’s hymn of praise to the Lord and allows us to rejoice together in the greatness of God.
“Lord, I Need You”
One of the most beautiful, powerful, and popular Christian songs ever written, “Lord, I Need You” is a passionate declaration of love for God. This version of the song has a simple and direct melody that allows people of all ages to sing along or listen and reflect easily.
“Unworthy As I Am” (Matthew 18:12-14, Luke 15:11-32)
Based on the scripture of the Parable of the Prodigal Son, “Unworthy As I Am” explores the themes of reconciliation and forgiveness. Co-written with award-winning artist Gary Pinto, the song implores us to trust God’s capacity to forgive and accept us for what we are. The song is about starting anew, freeing ourselves from our shortcomings, and learning to believe in God’s message of hope and redemption.
Kevin McNeese started NRT in 2002 and has worked in the industry since 1999 in one form or another. He has been a fan of Christian music since 1991.
