Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. Mission - "Do It Alone" RMG Amplify's Mission dropped his second single of 2023. He's also collaborated with BrvndonP on two singles this year too. All four may sound uniquely different, but they're all heaters! A few things I appreciate about Mission's delivery are his voice fluctuation between "singy" melodies and straight hard-hitting bars. Also, the switch between tempos throughout. Both intertwine keeping pace with the fresh production feeding the background. One of my favorite bars from Mission says, "I'm passing go, not passing no judgment / did everything that they said I couldn't." Stream "Do It Alone" on Apple Music here.
Shepherd feat. Angie Rose and Kieran the Light - "Team" RMG Amplify's Shepherd released his second single of 2023. Shepherd is known for handcrafting certified anthems for tracks including features from some of CHH's heavyweights. It's no different this time around as he enlisted God Over Money's Datin, Captiol Christian Music Group's Angie Rose, and independent rapper Kieran the Light.
To be honest, Datin, Rose, and Kieran delivered some of their sharpest bars to date. Not to be outdone, Shepherd shines bright like high beams not to be outdone by teammates. One of my favorite lines was from Kieran, "If I'm not winning, I still got Jesus in me / every time I'm still gonna deliver like I got pizza with me." Actually, he has my favorite wordplay throughout. The production matches with the lyrics, as they run the court like any of the Warriors teams from the past decade. Stream "Team" on Apple Music here.
I Can't Save Us by Nelohim
A part of the WORLD45 collective and Tusla's own, Nelo drops his second project in three years. He hopes to uplift, enlighten, and encourage others through his music. I Can't Save Us is a declaration that we cannot survive this life alone. We need God to battle daily opposition and the obstacles life always seems to present.
Favorites from the album are "Grace On My Wings" featuring Parris Chariz, "Can't Explain" featuring Ty Brasel, and "Make Me Feel." Nelo's art is life music. It's real-life situations most listeners and fans can directly relate with. He speaks about what struggles come his way and how God intervenes. Ty Brasel finds the perfect description during his verse on "Can't Explain" as the contacts are "a soundtrack for the outcasts."
Three weeks prior (March 17), Nelo released the only single off the project titled, "G-SHOCK." The track showcases both his abilities to harmonize and articulate creative, vibey bars. The featured artists are all attuned to Nelo's style and proposed messages conveyed. Parris Chariz, Ty Brasel, M.C., Aaron Cole, and Medisin all chime in with relevant contributions. Overall, the creative soundscape and track concepts are beautifully done. It's definitely worth checking out, especially if you're fans of either Nelo or any of the featured artists.
