Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. Below, we listen to a few highlights and list the rest for your own discovery. As always, follow our New Christian Rap & Hip Hop playlist on Spotify and Apple Music to listen to all the latest.
Trip Lee feat. Madison Ryann Ward - "At the Cross" One of the original rappers signed to Reach Records in 2005, Trip Lee returns with his latest single. A year after his last album release, he plans to drop a new single every month on the last Friday of the month starting in April. "At the Cross" gives comparison vibes to what KB accomplished on the His Glory Alone album. The task of taking a classic worship tune and flipping it with a fresh, urban street anthem. The hymn dates back to 1878 written by Elisha A. Hoffman. Trip takes the classic hymn from the pews to the city asphalt hoping to connect new believers to the beauty of the cross.
Self-produced, the track features dynamic sounds and thought-provoking content. It's a personal reminder of the glory known as the cross; Jesus' cross. The song also encourages believers to leave their burdens at the cross and walk forever in its freedom. Trip's latest music is the fruit of his personal endurance and a reminder that even when we come to what feels like "the end," there is more to the story (testimony).
Madison Ryann Ward is a beautiful addition to the track adding something special throughout the track. Stream "At the Cross" on Apple Music here.
Porsha Love feat. V.Rose - "Be Nice" (prod. by Scootie Wop) Independent rapper Porsha Love teams up with veteran V.Rose for a solid track produced by the multi-talented Scootie Wop. Holy girls unite once again for a catchy little bop. The track is based on a model of strong morals, mind, and heart when facing life generally speaking, and when considering relationships. Not only could it stay fresh as a summer anthem, but it's a positive message for women to remain strong in who they are and who Christ sees them defined as. The beat is simplistic in nature, but the bassline is prepped to rattle car windows and hearts alike. Stream "Be Nice" on Apple Music here.
Self-Titled (Marqus Anthony) EPby Marqus Anthony The EP represents Detroit-style hip-hop properly spreading across the collection of six tracks. The overall vibe is mostly laid-back tracks that highlight smooth vocals. Gritty baselines permeate throughout paying homage to the iconic hip-hop sound Detroit is known for. Ira Dos produced all six tracks. Marqus Anthony laced the solid production with storytelling, clever bars, and suave flows. He speaks to how God changed his life providing him with a new purpose to expose souls to the Gospel winning them for Jesus Christ. Honestly, this is a small example of Anthony's growth and exemplifies his skill on the mic as an emcee. The EP contains some of his best writing and taste of creativity.
Some of my favorite tracks are "Know My Name," "Thank God," and "Up Now" featuring Unkle GMO. Anthony chronicles personal struggles detailing how God has been clutch in every circumstance. If you're looking for a solid independent artist hungry to capture the attention of those in need of Christ and the streets in general, this project satisfies.
