Praise band Elevation Worship and contemporary artist Brandon Lake have collaborated on a powerful worship song about God's love, which can be found on Elevation Worship's latest album, Can You Imagine? More than any song on that record, I haven't been able to stop listening to it. God's love isn't just something to mentally acknowledge; it's something to be experienced. Let's see what the Bible and the lyrics of "Runnin" show us about God making His love known to us.
"Your love is better than life/I can't even wrap my mind around it/One day here in Your house/Better than a thousand elsewhere/Your love keeps on running, running/Keeps on running after me, oh/Keeps on running, running/Keeps on running after me, yeah."
God wants you to know His love for you.
"I have tasted, I have seen/The realness of Your love for me/It's written on Your hands and feet/It's all the evidence I'll ever need."
We know that the best demonstration of God's love for us is the death of His Son, Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins. Romans 5:5-13 teaches that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us so the penalty for our sins could be forgiven and we could have a new friendship with God. The famous Bible verse John 3:16 tells us that God loved the world so much that He gave His Son, Jesus so that everyone who believes in Him would not perish but have eternal life.
That alone is an incredible gift of God's mercy and kindness that we should be grateful for. As Brandon Lake sings in the song, "It's all the evidence I'll ever need." But it gets even better. God wants you to experience His love, not just know it.
Romans 5:5 (NLT): "...For we know how dearly God loves us because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love."
Ephesians 3:18-19 (NLT): "...And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully..."
Apostle Paul's prayer for the Ephesian believers was essential to God, and He desires to answer it. And the Holy Spirit's purpose in our lives is to fill us with God's love.
Final Thoughts
"And there's no one that can take Your place, no/There's nothing that can separate, no/Oh, how high, how wide, how deep Your love/The greatest love the world has ever seen."
Knowing and experiencing God's love in our minds and hearts leads to a response of praise to God for His love. That's what "Runnin" is. It's an overflow of praise to God for His love revealed on the cross and made real in our hearts. It makes me think about how many times in the Psalms, King David joyfully praised God for His unfailing love.
As you read Scripture and meditate on God's love for you, offering Him a sacrifice of praise is important. And if you need a song to sing to Him, "Runnin" is an excellent choice.
