Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. Below, we listen to a few highlights and list the rest for your own discovery. As always, follow our New Christian Rap & Hip Hop playlist on Spotify and Apple Music to listen to all the latest.
Scootie Wop feat. Lecrae and Fred Hammond - "NO WEAPON (Remix)" RCA Inspiration's Scootie Wop drops the remix to one of his top hits from 2022 released on September 2, 2022 without any features and nearly a million Spotify streams. Over 13 months later, Wop returns with a refreshed version featuring Reach Records' Lecrae and one of Gospel music's icons; Fred Hammond. Hammond has a track with the same name released in 1997 currently with close to 24 million streams on Spotify.
This remixed version uses similar production with the addition of two features and a choir was added complimenting the track nicely. First, we hear a verse from 'Crae. Then, Wop adds in his original verse contribution. Hammond wraps up the track with a powerful course of melodic runs. It's a pleasing track to the ears. Stream "NO WEAPON (Remix)" on Spotify and Apple Music.
Dee Black feat. Fern (of SCM) and Mouthpi3ce - "Whole Life" HISstory Music Group's Dee Black drops his third single of 2023 featuring Fern from the Social Club Misfits and indie rapper Mouthpi3ce. Black handles the hook while Fern and Mouthpi3ce add an iconic boom-bap like delivery and flow. It's a solid track through and through. I love the highlights of horns and keys within the overall production throughout. Fern returns to his more gritty sounding verses found in early Social Club days. Mouthpiece is always solid with content. Stream "Whole Life" on Spotify and Apple Music.
Peabod - "Lifetime Supply" Newly independent artist (formally wiith Centricity Music) Peabod released his sixth single of 2023, “Lifetime Supply.” The track displays a different, nostalgic side of him. Not everybody is aware that Peabod’s musical focal point began within the range of folk music. Just give the guy an acoustic guitar and creativity emits from its strings. I love to feature artists with wider ranges and varied talents, as hearing trap hip-hop weekly does grow tiresome, even for hip-hop heads. The concept behind the track is quite relevant speaking to the perspective of possessing a lifetime amount of well, life. Overall, it’s more of a mashup between a Tobymac and Jewell track perhaps. I admire the live instrumentation present and the overall energy. As most know, Peabod remains one of my top sleeper artists to date. Stream “Lifetime Supply” on Spotify and Apple Music.
