Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. Below, we listen to a few highlights and list the rest for your own discovery. As always, follow our New Christian Rap & Hip Hop playlist on Spotify and Apple Music to listen to all the latest.
Bill B. feat. Taelor Gray - "WHTK"
Columbus-based rappers Bill B. and Taelor Gray bring forth that gritty, bars frenzy delivery tagged as some of Bill B.'s strongest content to-date. The included sermon sample seems seamless with its inclusion as it fits with the content from both artists. I love the "live drums" sound too, as its like two rappers spatting back-n-forth in a freestyle battle. If the single is any reflection of what CHH artists have to offer in 2024, fans are in for one treat after another. Stream "WHTK" on Spotify and Apple Music.
Coop x Swaizy - "Dirty Room Steppin" Divine Outcast Collective's Coop (Cooper Hill) and Swaizy drop 2024's overall anthem fueled by production from 100graham (GRAHAM). The cover art simply says, "WE MISSED YOU". It could be referring to the lyricist Coop as fans have been blessed with the vocalist soaked in R&B hits in 2023. Also, it could be referring to Swaizy who only released five singles the previous year. In any case, the duo has something special planned for the next release Friday, January 12.
The bass-heavy track has lyrical gems throughout from both artists. Lines like, "kids get more screen time than David Hasselhoff." Both Coop and Swaizy combine witty, humorous content throughout while displayed their pristine bar-heavy talents. Stream "Dirty Room Steppin" on Spotify and Apple Music.
AMADEUS EP by Dre Murray For the past 20 years, Dre Murray has contributed to the CHH space. Either as a solo artist, involved in the Hells Paradise mixtape series with Wit or a part of the We Live As Kings super group through Collision Records. Murray has released over 13 projects of content created in excellence. The last handful of projects (AMADEUS, Reborn, Darth Vader II) haven't been released to digital service providers (DSPs) such as Spotify and Apple Music. They've been solely available via his website, dremurray.com. Exclusive content for an iconic artist.
Listed on his website, Murray explains the motives behind the latest project best. "Sometimes, through conversations, experiences, and just sitting in silence; I’m reminded of God’s love. A love not just for me, but for all of humanity. AMADEUS came about via one of these simple reminders. What began as a text message exchange between Brent Rice and I, turned into conversations and voice notes about the love of God. This is AMADEUS, love of God and love for God. A prelude to the upcoming sequel Manumit 2. All songs were produced by Brent Rice, mixed by Dre Murray, and mastered by Wit."
The content included on AMADEUS feels familar, yet modern. It's hip-hop. It's boom-bap. Yet, it's innovative. One of the greatest lyricists and storytellers in CHH (or hip-hop in general), Murray blessed the ears and hearts of listeners with this short 5-track offering. Some of the tracks are six and seven minutes in length, an anomaly in today's culture of tracks ranging between two or three minutes total. Oddly, Murray's flows are soothing making it easily listen to him rhyme for seven or even ten minutes straight. He flows with ease and the production stitches into everything seamlessly. AMADEUS is beautifully pieced together. Purchase the project at dremurray.com.
