LIN D, Sweden's quickly rising sibling pop band, is gaining traction with its catchy and honest songs about its relationship with God. Among them is "Anything," a song about surrendering entirely to Jesus and being willing to do anything He asks. Infused in these infectious pop melodies are lyrics packed with biblical truth, so let's see what we can learn from this song.
"Whatever You're asking, Yes Lord/Whatever You're needing, It's Yours/Whatever You're wanting, You can have it all/Anything, Anything/No more bringing just part/You deserve my whole heart/Anything, Anything/No limit, no condition/In light of all You've given."
Your life is worship to Jesus.
"How can I/Repay You/For all You've done for me/How can I/Say Thank You/For all You've won for me...This life that/You gave me/I'll give it back to You/Surrendered/Completely."
I love how these lyrics present both the question and the answer, which form the heartbeat of this song. The song suggests that to show our gratitude to Jesus and our gratitude for all He has done for us, we must surrender our lives back to Him. We find this concept in Bible passages like Romans 12:1-2.
Romans 12:1-2 NLT: "And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice--the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good, pleasing, and perfect."
Interestingly, the Apostle Paul writes the words of this passage as he opens the last section of the book of Romans, which focuses on how to live out our faith in Jesus practically. In the preceding eleven chapters, Paul had been expounding the theological significance of Jesus' death on the cross and resurrection and its impact on our lives: salvation from our sins, freedom from sin's power over us, eternal relationship with God, and more. In this context, Paul encourages Christians to offer their lives to God as living sacrifices that are pleasing and acceptable to Him.
We often associate worship with singing songs of praise to God, and while musical worship is an essential part of it, it's not the only way to worship. We see this as accurate throughout the Bible, especially in the book of Psalms. But ultimately, worship is living a life devoted to pleasing Jesus and living according to His will. And when we do this, our lives–not only our songs–become an offering of worship and gratitude to Jesus in light of all He's done for us.
Final Thoughts
As we read in these scriptures, Jesus' plan for us is that we would be transformed into new people as He teaches us to think and live according to His will. His plans for us are to follow Him daily, learn from Him, become more like Him, and join Him in His work in the world so that His name is honored and more people are drawn to Him.
Is the attitude of your heart the same as LIN D sings about in this song? As you commit to following Jesus and surrendering to His process of shaping you more into His will and ways, can He expect anything of you? And will your answer be "Yes, Lord?" In light of His mercies, whatever He asks of you, let your life be an act of worship to your Savior and King.
