When writing or editing articles, my eyes tend to gravitate toward the tried and true: Chris Tomlin, for KING + COUNTRY, you get the picture. My eyes will gloss over the emerging or upcoming gems. Pop artist Sarah Reeves is one of those gems—and here’s the kicker: I came across her music years ago.
Reeves is not a new artist, but she's making waves with her new music. I came across her music while shopping for new songs to listen to. Her mainstream single "Get Back Your Fight" caught my attention. At that point, I realized I had added "Anxious," another great song, to one of my playlists years ago.
Listening to her music has been a source of inspiration for me, and I wanted to share my experiences with you. Consider this a launching board for you to explore her catalog further.
"Get Back Your Fight"
In a month, Sarah gained 25,000 new followers by posting a reel of her demoing the first verse and chorus of her mainstream hit, “Get Back Your Fight.” The song offers listeners a glimpse into Sarah’s mental health journey.
In a press release, Sarah shares: “I've done much digging deep and healing [in 2023], but sometimes I surprise myself when something triggers me or takes me back a few steps. It's discouraging, but at the same time, I never want to be afraid to confront those issues that are deeply rooted in my heart.”
The song uses vivid imagery to point out the pain: "Underneath, I'm slowly dying/Stuff all my problems down, make some music drown it out/Learned about the grieving cycle/Still at stage one in denial.” It also fights back at fear, reassuring listeners that they’re not alone in their struggle: “Fear is a lie, we'll be alright/Don't let this battle take days off your life/Sun's gonna shine future is bright/Promise one day you're gon' get back your fight.”
Sarah continues: “Let's keep growing, keep healing. And don't be too hard on yourself when you mess up. No hurt is ever wasted. We're all in this together. Be kind to one another.”
"Best Days"
According to Wonderland, “Best Days” was one of the first songs written for Sarah’s album of the same name. The title track anchored the album, establishing its sound and theme. The songs cover a variety of styles, from catchy pop tunes to sincere reflections on relationships, exploring the artist's inner self.
“I sang [the title track] anticipating the future amid brokenness in my life. I sing from a different and deeper place on this album than ever,” she shares. “I hope it inspires every person who listens. I believe the best days are truly ahead of us.”
"Anxious"
NRT’s big boss, Kevin McNeese, introduced me to “Anxious” years ago. It still resonates with me all these years later. Probably even more so because of my battle with anxiety.
Sarah wrote the personal song after battling crippling anxiety. "Songwriting is how I express myself, putting my emotions into lyrics and melodies. It's therapy to me in a way," she explains.
She said she poured all her emotions into the song during a tough. Initially, Sarah had no intention of releasing the song to the masses. However, as she shared it with more people, she knew she had to share it with the world.
"This is a confession song. The first step to healing is confession," Sarah admits. "If you're someone who struggles with anxiety and depression, I pray you can acknowledge these lies and know that you can and will overcome them. I hope this song can help you know you are not alone."
"Staring at a screen light/Looking at the highlights, everybody's good life reminding me of what I don't have/Second-guessing who I really am... Devil's running around my mind/Why do I let myself believe the lies/It's like I'm his playground/Push me in the background/Then I shut the world out."
"Dance to It"
Music is powerful, and uplifting songs of encouragement can drive you to connect well with others and overcome life’s challenges. Sarah’s upbeat “Dance With It” fits the bill. The song toasts life’s highs and lows with a memorable chorus: "To the love, to the pain, to the memories we made, to the past, to the dreams, to the future unseen. We can dance to it."
