Steffany Gretzinger provides a unique sound in the crowd of many. In a world inundated by so many voices trying to tell us who we should be or who we ought to worship, she brings Jesus and His sacrifice back to the center of the words we profess with our lips.
She is a singer, worship leader, and songwriter based out of Nashville, Tennessee. Many have come to know her voice from her time with Bethel Church and their music collective out of Redding, California, which she was a part of from 2008 to 2019. There she recorded her debut song "You Know Me" in 2012 for their, The Loft Sessions, album. Since then, she has gone on to release five solo albums infused with lyrics that minister to the Lord and His people. Steffany has collaborated with a variety of others within the worship realm such as Amanda Cook, Melissa Helser, Chandler Moore, Leeland, and more.
The way in which Steffany passionately leads worship is very presence-driven and overflows from a place of personal intimacy with Jesus. She has managed to relay those tender moments in His presence with language that is tangible for all to receive. Not only does she create music from this place, but she also shares at conferences and in podcasts, providing a mentoring voice to the next generation. If you have been wondering where to start in listening to her discography, here are 5 songs you can add to your playlist.
"Holy" (The Narrow Way - 2023)
"Holy" was the first song released from Steffany's most recent album The Narrow Way. The lyrics of this song join in with the chorus of heaven, it invites listeners into what is already happening in the throne room. As we look at Revelation 4:8 (ESV): "...day and night they never cease to say, 'Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!'" It is a song of declaration, of who God is, with the ability to bring immense peace and awe to our human frame.
"Sing the song that won't grow old/Name that all of heaven knows/Who was and is and is to come/We'll lift Him up"
"As The Deer" (Faith of My Father - 2021)
After Steffany's father's passed away, her heart began to be filled with the songs of her youth--the songs she had sung with her dad and that had brought her, her first moments in the presence of God. So, "As The Deer" is one of the many hymns and older songs that Steffany decided to record in honor of the faith of her father on her Faith of My Father album.
As you listen through her rendition of the song you cannot help, but feel the years of history in her voice passing along the message of our Father in heaven. It feels almost like a lullaby the way the lyrics flow through. As she sings: "You alone are my strength, my shield/To You alone may my spirit yield/You alone are my heart's desire/And I long to worship Thee."
"No One Ever Cared For Me Like Jesus"(Forever Amen - 2020)
This song always seems to find me when I need to hear it the most. Whenever I need to be reminded of God's faithfulness this song brings me back into that state of remembrance. The lyrics in this song compel my heart with gratitude, truly: "No one ever cared for me like Jesus / His faithful hand has held me all this way."
This song reflects Steffany's walk of faith and how she has clung to Jesus in every season, how He has been with her through it all.
"Sing My Way Back" (Blackout - 2018)
"Sing My Way Back" shows how integral worship has been to unify her life to God's will. It tells the story of her life in a way that can be sung again and again with lyrics that can be resonated with many. As we all feel like sometimes we lose direction and are unsure of what the next step to take in life is, but how God can meet us even in those moments of uncertainty.
"When I lose direction/When I can't see the stars/If we get disconnected/I'll sing my way back to Your heart/I'll sing my way back to Your arms."
"Constant One" (The Undoing - 2014)
The Undoing was Steffany's first solo album and for me was my introduction to her music in my middle school years. I remember sitting in my room spending time reading my Bible and just singing these songs (including "Constant One") back to the Lord.
When I first heard this album all the way through, I had one of those moments where everything just clicked for me--that following Jesus is so simple, and it is so sweet. Of course, God is all powerful and incomprehensible in so many ways, but I think sometimes we forget that He will be faithful to fulfill all our needs, all our incapability because He sent Jesus to unify us back to Him and to cover all our sin!
When I listen to this song now, it brings me back to the simplicity of the Gospel. It also reminds me to get more childlike again, because the One I am singing to has never changed, even if I have.
"Constant One, who is like You, God?/Your mercy's like the sun/Always rising over us."
