Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. Below, we listen to a few highlights and list the rest for your own discovery. As always, follow our New Christian Rap & Hip Hop playlist on Spotify and Apple Music to listen to all the latest.
SORRY, I CHANGED by Aaron Cole Sony Provident's Aaron Cole released his first project under his new label and third overall full-length album since 2016. Prior to the release of this album, Cole dropped four singles which appear on the album along with the 13 total tracks. Only two featured artists are included, but they're both powerhouses in their own spaces. Gospel legend Kirk Franklin appears on SBTN (Something 'Bout That Name) and Franklin's own "Something About the Name of Jesus" is sampled. Then, soulful superstar DOE appears on "Infinity." For the past eight years, Cole has showcased his multi-talented abilities in Christian spaces. Not only is Cole a refined lyricist known as a top-tier rapper; Cole is also known for his vocal harmonies as one of the best artists on the soul and R&B side of the music spectrum. Not too many other artists are as well-rounded as Cole, as he's finetuned his God-given vocal talents since pre-school days; literally.
Favorites off the album include "2 Cents,"Look at God," and "What It's Like." The overall album presents as his most refined work of art to date. Listeners can hear the hours, weeks, and months poured into its creation. The project's sonic value isn't presented like a cookie cutter carbon copy of a specific genre. It's a near-perfect blend of when R&B meets hip-hop including high quality values found both in the production credits and Cole's delivery. When I think about the overall vibe and theme of this album, the word maturity comes to mind. As expected, Cole's more seasoned now than pre-COVID. Now a married man, perspectives have changed. Like his own personality and traits, the album is polished. Both in sound and content. Don't take my word, as please check out the project for yourself as your ears deserve excellence between them. Limoblaze x KB - "One Day" Reach Records' Limoblaze teams up with Sony Entertainment's KB for a certified springtime anthem. Currently, KB's headlining The Glory Nights Tour featuring Limoblaze, nobigdyl., WHATUPRG, and several special guests such as Trip Lee and Childlike CiCi. It's only natural that 'blaze and KB cook up something special for the people. It's a beautiful mix of the Caribbean with KB's soft-toned encouragement sprinkled in. These two mesh incredibly well sonically and their energy on stage seems unmatched. There are portions of the track that remind me of KB's previous hit, "I Believe." This is a track I can repeat constantly without the cotent feeling repetitive or tiresome. It possesses a vibe which forces a smile every time listeners click play. Stream "One Day" on Spotify and Apple Music.
tylerhateslife - "mental health 2."
Independent artist tylerhateslife releases a sequel to his most streamed single which has amassed over 7.5 million streams alone on Spotify. He doesn't actually hate life, as it's a scriptural reference to John 12:25. Similar to the likes of Aaron Cole, Tyler's vocal abilities are dripping in variety, range, and creativity. He can sing and vocalize or he can drop one of the dopest sixteens in rhymes.
The original song was released in February of 2023 and spoke of the most raw and darkest moments witnessed in life. For this track, Tyler turns it more into a positive vibe and speaks about the goodness of God and how he's survived everything through self-love and focused faith. The production goes crazy and I promise listeners it's different than most of everything else streaming out there. Tyler's always been a favorite of mine since I discovered him on one of OnBeatMusic's Critique Friday sessions for Rapzilla in 2022. Hopefully, he'll be a favorite of yours soon enough. Stream "mental health 2." on Spotify and Apple Music.
