The ambient and introspective worship album has a soothing musical feel, which is just one of its many attractions. I'm drawn to the sincere lyrics, beautiful musical beds, and profound songwriting. Plans tell David's wrestling story through heartache, depression, confusion, and redemption with his family and God. It's the most spine-tingling ambient worship project I've experienced this year. Each song is entirely anointed, Spirit-led, and emotionally captivating. This album is truly a masterpiece with no weak songs.
David's distinctive and passionate vocals and the album's deep, prayerful, and vertical lyrics engage me. I had the chance to speak with David about his song, “Good Lord.”
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
“Good Lord” is a common phrase that I turned into a moment of praise. The song reflects on my history with God. When I look back and see where I came from, His hand is so evident. It’s hard not to be thankful. He’s been with me every step of the way, every moment. He was good then, and He is good now.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV): “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Hebrews 11:1 (NLT): "Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see."
Romans 8:28 (NKJV): "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose."
Psalm 40:1 (NIV): "I waited patiently for the LORD; He turned to me and heard my cry."
Isaiah 40:31(VOICE): “But those who trust the Eternal One will regain their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run--never winded, never weary. They will walk--never tired, never faint.”
1 Peter 5:6-7 (NIV): “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”
Romans 15:13 (NIV): "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."
Psalm 139:17-18 (NKJV): "How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand. When I awake, I am still with You."
Psalm 145:1-3 (VOICE): “I will lift my praise above everything to You, my God and King! I will continually bless Your name forever and always. My praise will never cease—I will praise You every day; I will lift up Your name forever. The Eternal is great and deserves endless praise; His greatness knows no limit and recognizes no boundary. No one can measure or comprehend His magnificence.”
What is the takeaway message?
This song is a testament to the goodness of God in my life. Like everyone, I’ve had good days and days I wish I could forget. But looking back, it’s clear that the Lord is with me through them all. In each moment of our lives, God is always good, and that never changes.
Lyrics
When I look back, I can see that It’s You who met my needs every time Every moment You were holding Even smallest details of my life I can testify
Oh, You never let me down So, I know You won’t start now
I may not know what tomorrow holds But I know one thing for sure Good Lord, I got a good Lord Every day, every step of the way, it’s You who opened the door Good Lord, I got a good Lord Good Lord, I got a good good Lord
It’s still amazing how You saved me How You took a million wrongs and made them right And it’s crazy how you raised me from six feet under shame, Back to life I gotta testify
God is good all the time All the time, God is good God is good all the time, all the time, all the time
Closing Thoughts
We should not be ashamed to sing of our dependence on God and show Him reverence. We are not at the end of our story. He is still writing our stories of redemption. He wants us to know that He's faithful in completing what He's started in all of us who've put all our hope and trust in Jesus for our salvation.
"Good Lord" strikes a chord with me, highlighting Jesus' call for unwavering trust in God, irrespective of our circumstances, personal distractions, or worries. It's not just about agreeing intellectually; God desires to be the focal point of our deepest desires. While our minds may change swiftly, our hearts remain steadfastly devoted.
When I listen to this song, I am challenged to determine whether I am compartmentalizing my life, transcending my realities when I worship the Lord, or recognizing that Jesus is my Lord regardless of how I'm feeling or what I'm going through.
King David sings with a fantastic passion, with unashamed praise and gratitude to our Savior, who is very inspiring and emotionally moving. His songs are poignant and powerful, with earnest, worshipful lyrics. While listening to this song, you’ll feel like you are eavesdropping on David’s prayer, like his namesake in the Bible.
This is a beautiful song of encouragement and prayer to ask God to break your pride, live redemption's story, and move closer to who we're meant to be in Christ. Allow God and His Holy Spirit to change you to be more like Jesus and move closer to His glory. Even if that looks like God unraveling the threads of your heart. God wants us to know that He's faithful in completing what He's started in all of us who've put all our hope and trust in Jesus for our salvation.
Sometimes, people think they worship at an event or church or through music. Worship should be intelligent. Worship is what we put our "worth-ship" in, not something we do by going through the motions or mindlessly. We are called to "love the Lord your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength." You can join in and sing along with your breath, given by God, “I may not know what tomorrow holds/But I know one thing for sure/Good Lord, I got a good Lord/Every day, every step of the way it’s You who opened the door/Good Lord, I got a good Lord.” Amen to that.
