I quit watching Christian videos years ago. I found the production to be a joke, the concepts cliché and the distribution next to non-existent which just frustrated me.
However, I recently sat down during my lunch break to watch the
X 2005 DVD after it came in the mail. It's been awhile since I committed my free time to watching Christian videos, so I was genuinely excited to see this collection that included footage from tobyMac, Sanctus Real, Kutless, Falling Up and Seventh Day Slumber to name a few.
Halfway through my turkey sandwich with a side of Nacho Cheese Doritos (the best chip on planet earth), I realized that through the years, I haven't been missing much.
There are certainly a few highlights on this sixteen video collection, including Pillar's very well done "Bring Me Down" and tobyMac's "Gone," but videos from Kutless, Falling Up and Sanctus Real left me thinking that somehow, my Christian video collection got swapped with a submission tape from Director's Amateur Hour.
But whining about the lack of great Christian videos is not the point of this entry. I'm here to talk about the saving video that makes this collection worth owning.
I first saw this video online late last year, while the artist was releasing his new album. I sat in my office late at night, killing time before heading to bed, and watched this video with tears streaming down my face. It had such an effect on me, I watched it again, which only opened the floodgates even more. I spent the next couple of days talking about it with some friends and then forgot about it, until now.
Watching it again for the third time during lunch choked me up. Here was a video, a Christian video, that has given me new hope for the future. A video that captures the heart of the song, visualizes a story that can be told in under 4 minutes, and reaches hard to squeeze as much emotion as possible from the viewer.
The video is for "Take You Back" by Jeremy Camp. Of course, a video is only as good as the song, and that's obviously not a problem here. But it's the visual story told by director Brandon Dickerson that expands on the message behind the music. The video shares a story about a boy leaving his father's house in anger only to find that life on the street contains no protection and love and he can only find at home. It's a story that parallels our Heavenly Father waiting with open arms, ready to accept us back after we have turned and tried to make it on our own.
I guess the thing that gets me while watching this video is the realization that God is chasing us every minute of every hour of every day. He wants us to always be with him and it pains him when we turn away. But even more touching is that he rejoices when we come back. It doesn't matter how many times we've turned or how long it's been, He'll take us back. Jeremy's song and video remind us of that truth and it's wonderful to have it on DVD to play again and again.
