I recently moved to a big city with my family and have been attending a variety of local rock and metal shows. Something I've noticed is that there is a distinct difference in the moments after the show between Christian-based bands and mainstream. The former should leave you with a message of hope and love in godly brotherhood. The latter is primarily in it for entertainment (though still quite positive at times) and is not the same.
This is one of the reasons why I'm a big supporter of the Christian rock and metal scenes. I hope that this article series helps you discover more bands that can deliver the types of messages you want and need to hear in the songs. Here are some of the new songs and albums released in April 2024.
Heal The Hurt - "Withering"
I'm excited to introduce you to a new metalcore band: Heal The Hurt. Fronted by Trevor Tyson, an avid supporter of the Christian rock and metal community, Trevor has started a new band. The debut single, "Withering," is a song that tackles mental health and presents a shred of hope amid vulnerable, relatable songwriting. This song is a refreshing debut for the band and I hope we get more music from them soon.
Confessions of a Traitor - "Hail Mary"
Following an already heavy-hitting single, "Fatal Frame," the English metalcore band Confessions of a Traitor recently unleashed one of their most impactful and aggressive songs yet. "Hail Mary" is not what you might think based on the name alone--the song directly addresses and condemns abuse in the church. To add to the weight of the song, the singer from metalcore band Convictions, Michael Felker, adds his own intense screams to the mix. The result is an impressive and heart-wrenching metalcore song that highlights Confessions of a Traitor as experts in the scene and tackles a hushed topic.
My Epic - "North Star"
It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Facedown Records and any band attached. My Epic was a long-time signed band but recently they made a big change--the post-hardcore group is going to release their fourth studio album through Tooth and Nail Records. The album, Loriella, will release on June 28. The lead single, North Star," is accompanied with a great, narrative music video. The song encourages us to embrace change in our lives and reflect on our past--seeing how it can improve ourselves and those around us. It is an emotive song, and I'm excited to see how it interacts with the rest of the record as a whole.
