Alabama's Big Daddy Weave--Mike Weaver, Jeremy Redmon, Joe Shirk, and Brian Beihl--have each learned what it means to live by faith and to trust in a God who makes all things new.
Without a doubt, the band loves God. You can see the evidence when they perform at their worshipful live shows. You can tell it when you listen to their hit songs, "Redeemed," "Overwhelmed," "The Lion and The Lamb," and "My Story."
Big Daddy Weave's 2019 album, When The Light Comes, is no different. I named it one of my top ten albums of 2019. The album features the standout songs "Alive," "I Know," "All Things New," and "This is What We Live For."
True to form, When The Light Comes reflects real life and emotion, from longing and struggle to breakthrough and gratitude. Every song displays the band's heart behind what they do, leading people in worship. This list demonstrates the passion and energy that have made Big Daddy Weave one of Christian music's most compelling acts. In connection with their new single, "Let it Begin," I've compiled my top five Big Daddy Weave songs.
"Redeemed"
This band can really write a catchy and truth-filled chorus. After repeated listens, the sincere and poignant lyrics, musical excellence, and Mike Weaver's compelling vocals make this song my all-time favorite by this great band.
"Redeemed" is a personal testimony to the power of redemption. The song has quickly become one of my daily devotional prayers of thankfulness to God for showing me grace and forgiveness despite my failures. We serve a loving and merciful God who accepts us as we are, not who we pretend to be.
"All Things New"
This song celebrates the freedom we have in Christ when we're born again. It's a personal testimony about the power of redemption. In today's culture, it's radical for people to accept heaven's entrance requirements--repentance and spiritual rebirth.
I love singing this song back to Jesus, telling Him plainly that I need no other than Him. Pray along, "You make all things new/You make all things new/God of mercy and love/Do what only You can do and make all things/All things, You make all things new."
"My Story"
Our stories all connect perfectly with this song, as it's based on 1 Corinthians 9:22: "To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some." The "irrefutable argument" we have as believers is to share our story of grace. This song celebrates the day we were saved from our sins and causes listeners to reflect on and celebrate their salvation experience.
This song is about our Savior, Jesus, who overcame the grave. It's about submitting all of ourselves to Him and His goodness and allowing His blood to cover us and run through our veins. That's how we can "overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony." By stepping into the Lord's ability instead of relying on ourselves, we are empowered by the supernatural ability of God. This song has become my personal anthem, and I sing along at the top of my lungs the sincere and emotive lyrics of submission in the refrain: "To tell you my story is to tell of Him."
"You Found Me"
This song reminds listeners of their salvation experience. I was in my car listening to a Christian music album, and at the end of the album, the artist shared his personal testimony, which was also my story. I finally admitted to myself and God that I'm a sinner and I can't save myself. I pulled to the side of the road and sobbed as I was invited to join in saying the sinner's prayer. I confessed my sins, begged for forgiveness, and accepted Jesus as my personal Savior. I felt the presence of God there with me in my car, and I've never been the same.
Like Mike sings in the song, "My whole has changed ever since the day You came, the way I see, the things I want, I don't care what people say, I knew You were the only way."
"The Only Name (Yours Will Be)"
Once you've been saved (or "redeemed") and set free from bondage, we know what we've been saved from. This song is one of the answers to what we are saved for--to worship the name of Jesus with all of our hearts, all of our minds, and all of our strength.
We know from Proverbs 18:10 (NKJV): "The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe." Isn't that a wonderful truth? The Person of Jesus is all that we have and all that we need. Isn't crying out for the safety and protection of Jesus everything we need? There's safety and security in the knowledge of our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus. There's only one name under Heaven by which we can be saved, Jesus.
This song is a celebration that "when I wake up in the land of glory, with the saints I will tell my story, there will be one name that I proclaim...Jesus just that name."
