A theme that Switch weaves throughout their albums is remembering our identity of who we are in Christ. Better View (Deluxe) represents God's role in the life of the believer and our calling to "walk by faith and not by sight." In their song "Perfection," we are reminded that God chooses to focus not on our failures and shortcomings but on how much He loves us. If we can break away from the tendency to look at the negatives about ourselves and the people around us, we will be able to see what God sees in His children.
I had the chance to speak with Cassidy Estevez, Switch member and Ministry Leader of Worship Arts at Life.Church. about their catchy and poignant song "Covered."
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
This song describes the lightness we feel when we put our trust solely in Jesus. The song reminds us that we don't have to know all the answers to know that Jesus has us covered. Even in the middle of uncertainty, we can find freedom when we choose to trust God's plan for our lives.
You must come to a conscious place where you are willing to ask God to come and abolish anything we have planned that is not of Him. Replace all my plans with Your plans. It is a weighty surrender. His plans are so much better. I have experienced that in my life.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Romans 8:28 (VOICE): "We are confident that God is able to orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan."
1 Corinthians 13:12 (NKJV): "For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known."
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV): "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."
Psalm 91:1-2 (NKJV): "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust."
Psalm 139:5 (VOICE): "You have surrounded me on every side, behind me and before me, and You have placed Your hand gently on my shoulder."
Proverbs 18:10 (NKJV): "The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe."
Psalm 34:19 (NKJV): "Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the Lord delivers him out of them all."
Psalm 46:1 (NIV): "The Lord is our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble."
Psalm 121:7-8 (NKJV): "The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in, from this time forth, and even forevermore."
What is the takeaway message?
Trust God and let Him carry our burdens. That is the lighter and easier and free way of living. He is transforming us into His image, and we become more perfected as we become more like Him. I think the picture we have of seeing through a mirror dimly now and knowing God as we are known by Him is a beautiful picture that we are trying to capture in this album.
We are passionate about creating songs that combine a modern sound with the truth of the Gospel, and we wrote this album for anyone who is struggling with questions about their faith, especially students and young adults. This is the first generation that's growing up with so much exposure to unfiltered hardships across the world and social media comparison as a part of everyday life. We wrote these songs to help them navigate these difficulties with a faith perspective.
Lyrics
Highs and lows
You know I ride them
Day and night
You've got my back in the fight
Catch my breath
I'm gonna trust You
I'm gonna trust You
Play that song
Louder and louder
Dancing now
Feeling the freedom I've found
In Your love
I'm gonna trust You
Now I'm out here walking on air
Everywhere I go I know
You're right there
Even when I don't know what's coming next
You've got me covered
You've got me covered
And when I can't make sense of my thoughts
Even when I'm feeling a little bit lost I know
You'll be right there to help me back up
'Cause You've got me covered
You've got me covered
Sunshine
Brighter than ever
Feels so right
You turn my darkness to light
Deep breath
I'm gonna trust You
I'm gonna trust You
Closing Thoughts
God is love. We love because He first loved us. Have joy and worship loudly about the love of God in your life. His grace takes away anxiety, guilt, and shame. Know that being His is enough. In Cassidy's vocals, I hear a sincere yearning for the Lord. A thankfulness in her heart for God's mercy and grace.
I'm convicted by the strong lyrics and find immense comfort in this song. The Bible says to trust in what God says about us, no matter how we feel about ourselves. With many areas in our lives, we spend a lot of time worrying, as well as living in fear and anxiety.
Lay your doubts and struggles at the feet of Jesus, and He'll take them from you and release you from those burdens. God wants to hear from you. We're called as Christians to believe in the freedom that we have on the cross of Jesus. We're free from our addictions, insecurities, and perfectionism. Jesus came to die for us so we can all truly live in Him. While we can't see everything in our fallen world through life's mirror dimly obscuring grace and truth, there's nothing we can do except trust in His son, Jesus. His ways are higher than our ways. That's how we can have a better view.
Wait for God to orchestrate the plans for your life. You have nothing to bring to God. Maybe you expect something in return instead of recognizing that nothing compares to the greatness of knowing Jesus. Faith is when we are empty of ourselves and filled with Him and His Holy Spirit.
All we can do is submit to Him and give everything we have to Him. According to God's Word in Jeremiah 29:13, we need to search for God with all our heart and then we will find Him. In our fast-paced society, how often are we dedicating our whole hearts to God? Do we offer up half-hearted prayers or seek Him with all our hearts?
Cassidy writes and sings her breath, given to her by God, into anointed new songs for the church. You'll be blessed by this powerful song which is a stand-out anthem with a convicting declaration. We can all celebrate the truth behind this song. My hope for this song is for people to pray along and live out the truth behind these words. Our thoughts are constantly under attack by the enemy. This song is a great way to submit to God and commit yourself to Him. The Bible says to trust what God says about us, no matter how we feel about ourselves.
Followers of Jesus can sing every word and agree with the beautiful sentiments of this great song. His love is never-ending, and He is our refuge and our strength. As believers, heaven is calling our name. He is real. He is near. He is just a breath away. He is the author of our lives and knows what's best for us--much better than we do. That's reason to sing this empowering anthem at the top of our lungs in gratefulness to Him. No matter what you are going through, if you're looking for the words to pray to God, sing along with Cassidy: "You turn my darkness to light/Deep breath/I'm gonna trust You/I'm gonna trust You." Amen to that.
