Lecrae's latest single "Add It Up" is about the pains and traumas of life adding up and weighing us down. In this song, Lecrae gets real about how he turned to coping mechanisms like drugs and alcohol to deal with the hurt of all he'd been through. That sounds like a lot of people's stories today. It might even sound like your story.
When we're dealing with pain it's easy to try to numb it by coping in unhealthy ways. And even if we're not doing something that's dangerous to our life and health or something God commands us in the Bible not to do, sometimes we can still distract ourselves from pain with good things instead of running to Jesus to heal us. But by the time Scootie Wop hits the chorus, we see the true way to heal the pain we face in our lives, the way to see a turnaround in our stories, and the way to be free from the negative things we might have participated in as an outlet to cope: trusting in Jesus.
Jesus is the one Lecrae turned to to heal the pain of his trauma and to cleanse him from the choices in his life that were disobedient to God's ways and didn't match God's best path for his life. Here's the lesson in this song for you and me: whether you've never personally known Jesus as Savior and you need to trust your life to Him, or you're crippled by current pain or the pain of your past, turn to Jesus. He can help.
Psalm 147:3 (NLT): "He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds."
Lyrics
Never been scared of the pressure I'm pushing through everything (everything, everything)
Pressure was price
But I thought I could make it through anything (anything, anything)
Trauma on trauma on trauma on trauma
A murder or death is some issues with mama
I started drinking a pint every night
Just to help me too cope and then deal with the drama
On God (Oh God)
I put my hand on that Bible
I thought about takin' my life
On God (Oh God)
Sippin' and Smokin' and Poppin'
Look up and they get through the night
(Oh God)
I had a vision of Jesus
He told me to give up my life
Gave him my sins yeah I put it on him
He cleaned my up and I got it alright
I ain't gon' run in circles
Tryna find my purpose
Look back tryna feel sum'
But it was worthless
Took some time too
Add it up
Couple thing was adding up
Watch him turn it all around
Turn it all around for me (for me)
All around
Turn it all around for me (for me)
All around
Turn it all around for me
All around
Turn it all around
