At this point, I'm surprised when I hear someone in the Christian music circles hasn't yet stumbled upon the hilarious Instagram page and meme genius of Greenroom Revival. In recent years, the page's fanbase has grown significantly due to its tongue-in-cheek jokes and light-hearted roasts of Christian artists. Artists like Danny Gokey, Cory Asbury, Mark Hall of Casting Crowns, Brandon Lake, and countless others have joined in laughing at these memes and even running with the reoccurring jokes.
The page now has over eight thousand followers and continues to grow. It is a must-follow page for everyone in the Christian music world and passionate fans who want to laugh together.
After loving, sharing, and laughing too hard at many of these posts, I spoke to the anonymous mastermind behind Greenroom Revival himself. We discussed starting the page, having fun with artist interactions, and whether there will eventually be a face reveal.
How did you get started with posting memes and beginning Greenroom Revival?
One night, alone and single, I about had it. "You know what?" I said, "I'm gonna write me some funny Christian song titles," I wrote a list with titles like "Damascus Road Rage," "Pillar Of Salt To Taste," "This Is Just The Chorus," and "Green Room Revival." That night, I made 30 memes (if the brave scroll down on the Instagram page), and the page was born to us that night in Nashville. Angels sang.
I love that you're unafraid to poke fun at the Christian music industry and Church culture. How did that edge start?
I grew up with a church that threw "church bashes" yearly. We'd do skits roasting the pastors, changing out song lyrics, and so on. It was incredibly formative and, I'd say, quite healthy.
When did you realize your memes connected with people on a large scale and attracted attention?
When I saw that I was getting more Instagram shares than likes, I realized people weren't ready to be "seen" on the page but liked sharing it with their friends. "This stuff is true, and I'm embarrassed to admit it publicly."
You joke a lot about contemporary artist Danny Gokey, which is why I loved seeing him do a meme collab post with you to celebrate the release of his latest album. What are some artist connections that have surprised you?
The Casting Crowns "Dry Tour," featuring Mark Hall, has been entertaining. Seeing Mark double down on the roasts initially opened other artists up to saying, "Okay, we can take a joke and not be too serious in this industry." I'll get messages that management and crews pass around memes in their group texts, which always makes me laugh. Also, let's note: I've saved Danny Gokey's career, and he is extremely grateful. I mean, look at that smile.
What inspires you to keep making memes?
When worship artist Brandon Lake busted out the leopard pants, I knew the account would last forever. Humor opens us all up to truths about life. God is fun, funny, and full of smiles. He may have me making some memes in heaven. And again, as long as Danny Gokey is breathing, we'll have content. I saw him try to wrap a burrito once, but it did not go so well.
Many people have been curious about the story behind the page. With hints from other artists, Lauren Daigle to Shama Mrema, about who you are, why have you chosen to keep your identity hidden?
Both Lauren and Shama are legally prohibited from revealing the page's true identity, which, of course, readers will know is Christian music veteran Bill Gaither. Worship artist Cory Asbury once got the logins but was reckless with his captions. Pray for him.
Is there a plan for an eventual face reveal?
Who knows. Even if everyone finds out in Christendom, there are still a billion unreached people in China whom I could begin the ministry. See that church? It's about the Kingdom. Okay, let's bow our heads in prayer.
How can we be praying for you?
Oh wow, that transitioned perfectly. I want $10 million to build a temple to store Brandon Lake's awards. But seriously, I pray that you can enjoy what God loves, bringing smiles to the capital "C" Church, and join me in laughin' hysterically at every meme because they are anointed for such a time as this.
Thanks for giving us all some joy and laughs. We're excited for what's next.
