For many Christian artists, music is more than just a career—it's a calling. It’s a way to spread the Gospel, connect with listeners on a deeper level, and provide hope to those seeking it. Behind every lyric and melody lies a journey rooted in faith, filled with moments of divine inspiration and personal challenges.
In this interview with Sam Llanes, the September Independent Artist of the Month, we explore how one artist’s faith has influenced his music, the role of the church community, and the balance between creativity and conveying a message of hope. From battling industry pressures to relying on scripture for guidance, this artist shares personal experiences of how God has shaped their path and music.
What inspired you to make music, and how has your faith influenced your journey?
Music has always been a part of my life, but it wasn't until I truly encountered Jesus that I found my purpose. My faith influences every lyric, every beat, and every performance. It’s a way to communicate the hope and love I’ve found in Christ, to reach out to those who might be struggling, and to bring a message of redemption and grace. Jesus said, in Mark 16:15: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” I believe music is my way of doing that.
How do you stay grounded and focused on your mission in the music industry, which can often be very secular?
Staying grounded requires constant prayer, reading the Word, and surrounding myself with a community that holds me accountable. The music industry can be challenging, but I remember what Jesus said in John 15:5: "Apart from me, you can do nothing." This reminds me to stay connected to Him, allowing His Spirit to guide my decisions and actions.
Can you share a specific moment when you felt God’s presence profoundly while creating or performing your music?
While writing my song “Jesus El Rey,” I felt an overwhelming sense of God’s presence. It was as if He was right there, giving me the words and melody. It reminded me of Psalm 22:3, “But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.” God inhabits our praise, and in that moment, I knew He was with me, guiding me.
How do you balance the creative process with the message you want to convey in your music?
Balancing creativity with a message of faith involves seeking God first in everything. Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first his kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” I start with prayer, asking God to inspire my creativity and ensure my message remains clear and true to His Word.
What role does your church community play in your music career?
My church community is integral to my music career. They provide support, prayer, and feedback. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages us to "spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together... but encouraging one another." My church embodies this, helping me stay focused on my mission and providing a network of encouragement and accountability.
What challenges have you faced as a Christian artist, and how have you overcome them?
One major challenge is maintaining my identity in Christ amidst industry pressures. Ephesians 6:11 talks about putting on the full armor of God to stand against the devil’s schemes. I face these challenges by staying rooted in prayer, Scripture, and the support of my faith community, constantly reminding myself that my purpose is to glorify God, not to seek personal fame.
How do you handle criticism or negative feedback about your music or message?
Criticism can be tough, but I remember 2 Timothy 2:24-25, which encourages gentleness and patience in teaching. Criticism allows me to grow and refine my craft while staying true to my message. Constructive feedback helps me improve, and I trust God to use even the negative comments for His glory.
What do you hope listeners take away from your music?
I hope listeners find faith, hope, love, and the truth of the Gospel in my music. John 8:32 says, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” I want my music to be a vessel for God’s truth, setting people free from whatever holds them back and drawing them closer to Him.
Can you share some scripture that has been particularly meaningful to you in your music career?
James 1:27 has profoundly shaped my ministry: “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” My work with at-risk and foster kids is at the heart of my mission. It's a calling to serve those who are often forgotten, to provide them with hope and a sense of belonging through the love of Christ.
What advice would you give to other aspiring Christian artists?
Stay true to who God has called you to be. In Jeremiah 29:11, God promises, “For I know the plans I have for you—plans to prosper you and not harm you and give you hope and a future.” Trust in His plan, seek Him in all you do, and let your music authentically express your faith.
