Sweetwater is a biopic about Nathaniel "Sweetwater" Clifton, the first African American to sign a contract with the National Basketball Association (NBA). The film was initially released a little over a year ago, but Angel Studios has secured the rights to stream it and has released it on its platform.
While not a faith-based film per se, the biopic tackles themes that resonate with our current social climate. The depictions of racism, while perhaps a bit on-the-nose in some cases, will hit home, especially in our politically charged age. The inspirational story of overcoming adversity is a familiar one. Still, Sweetwater's unique take on it and its engaging narrative make it a film that will leave a lasting impact.
I could still appreciate the film's narrative as someone with a minimal sports background. Sweetwater's journey from humble beginnings through the Harlem Globetrotters and, finally, the New York Knickerbockers is rootable. Actor Everett Osbourne owns the role well and makes for an impactful lead. You'll notice other recognizable faces in supporting roles, such as Jim Caviezel, Jeremy Piven, Richard Dreyfuss, Kevin Pollak, and Carey Elwes.
While some of those roles may border on cameo, they do help lend the film credibility as a worthy Hollywood biopic. These are experienced veteran Hollywood actors who perform fine in their limited roles. Sweetwater's real-life notoriety may be much less than folks like Jackie Robinson. But his story is no less worthy of the big screen treatment.
A compelling cast elevates this inspiring sports biopic, making it a great addition to the Angel library. It's a good weekend watch for both adults and older children. Content concerns were of course minimal and the film's themes and setting make it an excellent conversation starter for families.
