Hey, music fans, it’s time for the latest installment of our Indie Artist Spotlight. We constantly seek new independent bands and artists to add to our playlists and personal collections. Whether from attending concerts, via direct submissions, or scrolling to the farthest ends of social media, we continue to deep dive for the up-and-coming artists long before you hear them on your favorite station or streaming app.
Here are this month's five artists and bands that I believe are "ones to watch" and will become one or more of your favorites. We want to invite you to check them out, and when you do, be sure to tell them you heard about them from us.
Crystoria
Probably one of the best-kept secrets in the Christian music scene today is this mother of four from Nashville, Tennessee. Crystal, also known as Crystoria, has been making music for a while. Her latest music is more powerful and authentic, reflecting life's trials and victories, resonating with many women today. Her vocals are powerful and sometimes guttural. She reminds me of early music from Flyleaf singer Lacey Sturm and Dawn Michele of Fireflight. If you’re looking for a strong female lead, Crystoria is the one.
XIII Minutes
After a few years of silence and contemplation, XIII Minutes is back and better than ever. XIII Minutes is an alternative metal band that hard rocks your ears and brain. With lyrics that are highly relevant to the current social, religious, and political climate, they challenge the status quo while at the same time giving you some things to think about. While XIII Minutes is a collection of members from previous bands, their sound is polished and cohesive.
They aren’t your typical classic Christian band, so don't expect that from them. However, if you're looking for powerful riffs, great sound, and deep lyrics, XIII Minutes is for you.
Stuart Patti Project
I love it when I come across humble artists who are talented and creative but do music as a hobby. That is the Stuart Patti Project. It is aptly named because Stuart includes his family in numerous aspects of his music. Whether with writing or laying down the tracks, his family has played a significant role in his music since 2021. With songs like "Lamb of God," "Legion," and "Come to Me," there is depth and soul in each of his songs. His vocals remind me of legendary rock band Smashing Pumpkins and artist Joe Bonamassa.
Hannah Barr
Okay, maybe she isn't a big secret, with 108,000 followers on Instagram and around 50,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. But how is Hannah Barr not at the top of every playlist? Why can I not find her music anywhere except on my devices, on Spotify, and my radio show?
She hails from Las Vegas and is a full-time master’s student and substitute teacher. Hannah manages to pursue her music career while juggling her busy life. She is a talented musician with crisp, clear, strong vocals, making her the real deal. I love listening to her music and have purchased six tracks to keep them on my devices. How has she yet to sign to a major label or headlining big shows? She can dance as well as sing, and she has what it takes to be a headliner. She reminds me a bit of Christian pop artists Hollyn and V. Rose. I can’t wait to hear new music and see her on stage shortly.
Faith Head
Faith Head is a metal band from Chattanooga, Tennessee, with an old-school southern rock and metal sound. The band has stayed true to form and released a new album, The Horror of Things to Come. The latest record is timely and relevant to the current state of our country, our society, and the world. If you like classic Christian metal with a one-two punch, you’ll enjoy Faith Head.
Tommy G is from Manchester, NH, and has been in the Christian Music Industry since 2003. He is a new artist scout, DJ, and the executive producer of The Revolution Show / www.RevolutionShow.org
