The Bible often uses the imagery of going from death to life when discussing how we are changed when we put our faith in Jesus. Before Jesus saves us, we are spiritually dead, and once we are saved, we become spiritually alive. When we believe in Jesus and trust Him to forgive our sins, we become a new creation spiritually and start a new life in Christ.
Bodie cleverly captures these biblical truths with “RIP.” Colossians 3 teaches us that since we have died in our old lives and been raised to a new life in Christ, we should “take off” some sinful behaviors and “put on” some righteous behaviors as God works to help us become more like Him. We’re called to remove greed and slander, replacing them with gentleness and humility.
When you became a follower of Christ, it was “RIP to the old you” and “hello to the new you in Christ.” Take some time to reflect on how Jesus has changed you since you started walking with Him, and ask in what ways He still wants to help you grow to be like Him even more.
Colossians 3:1-17 (NLT): For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God…So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you…Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.
Lyrics
[Intro]
RIP
[Verse 1] Part ways with the old days And the old spaces turn into warm ones Pour one out for the old me and my homies Think it’s time that I move on
[Refrain] So murder my ego, time to let me go Knife to my conscious, love to my people Follow my call; this light is too lethal Put my pride in the ground
[Pre-Chorus] ‘Cause when my flesh is dyin’ Is when I come alive
[Chorus] I just want somethin’ holy Only You and You only So I’ll keep dyin’ to who I am and to who I used to be RIP to the old me
[Verse 2] Might seem like a pipe dream Keepin’ myself buried on the daily Turns out when you lay down All your old ways in the grave Thеre’s a grace that’s amazin’
[Pre-Chorus] ‘Cause whеn my flesh is dyin’ Is when I come alive
[Chorus] I just want somethin’ holy Only You and You only So I’ll keep dyin’ to who I am and to who I used to be RIP to the old me RIP (RIP) RIP (RIP)
[Refrain] So murder my ego, time to let me go Knife to my conscious, love to my people Follow my call, this light is too lethal Put my pride in the ground So murder my ego, time to let me go Knife to my conscious, love to my people Follow my call, this light is too lethal Put my pride in the ground
[Chorus] I just want somethin’ holy Only You and You only So I’ll keep dyin’ to who I am and to who I used to be RIP to the old me RIP (RIP) RIP (RIP)
